Made in China

I was in a large department store over the weekend. I got into a conversation with an employee and I asked if most of the stuff in the store was made in China. The prices were oh so low and the quality seemed shiny and poor yet close enough, if you know what I mean.

The employee told me that not everything was made in China. They went on to say that a customer recently came in to buy shoes but the shoes had to be made someplace other than China. They said the buyer went away with three pairs of shoes. I was surprised.

They went on to say that this is a big question in the store. Customers ask it often. Is this made in China? They offered the explanation that people are upset about the recent recall of children's toys that were made in China. They are avoiding "made in China."

The explanation is plausible but it may not be complete. People don't want to buy made in China for a variety of reasons - from protesting China's occupation of Tibet, to Chinese environmental issues, to taking away American manufacturing, etc.

I checked on the web to see if there were active boycotts of made in China.

The answer is of course. Just a few samples:

Who would have ever guessed that it would end up being a marriage of American Capitalists and Chinese Communists that would finally finish off the 'Merican Middle Class once and for all. Ironic isn't it? Especially after these same assholes spent billions fighting each other.

Follow politics long enough and all you do is shake your head in disbelief all day long.
