Here is the article to keep handy when confronted by your denier relative or friend. It won't change their mind of course because this is now a severe partisan issue - changing a denier mind has morphed into changing their political views, and how screwy is that given that climate change is not a political policy but a scientific reality. Still, these are the facts.

The Market On Friday

Good morning. It is 8 degrees and incredibly sunny here in Upstate NY. The super cold continues but the weather logos promise a marginal rise in the temperature over the weekend. 35 degrees will seem like t-shirt weather given this deep long extended frigid slog. The weekend is here. Right now we are nursing our dog who had elbow dysplasia surgery on Wednesday. The dog has to wear one of those large head cones to keep her from gnawing on her elbow incision stitches. She has to endure this indignity for two weeks before the stitches come out. Well as they, it's always something and this year seems to be the need for surgery, first me two months ago and now the dog.

At 8:30 a.m. ET futures are slightly lower and the price of oil per barrel is slightly lower too. The market is poised to open slightly lower except...

This just in from CNN - "U.S. economy grew at 2.4% annual rate in last three months of 2013, down from prior estimate." This could be not so great news and reflect on the opening. All I can say is this will flesh out this morning as the number is parsed and digested.

The Market On Thursday

Good morning. It is 14 degrees and sunny here in Upstate NY. The super cold slogs on with the weather logos indicating a possible break on Saturday when the temperature might go above freezing. Okay, okay, we'll just be patient. We've had cold before, unrelenting frigid cold that normally leaves by January that is. The cold snap will break.

At 8:45 a.m. ET futures are moderately lower and the price of oil per barrel is down. The market is poised to open lower.

World attention is now firmly planted on the Ukraine where a pro-Russian government has been overthrown and is presently being replaced with apparently Russia itself. The Russians are 'active' in this crisis as it were. Just what we need, a return to the cold war and yes Putin clearly is the latest in a string of Russian despots. Imperialism is imperialism. Investors might get a break from Yellen's anticipated testimony. Otherwise this Ukraine mess could sour things for a while.

...the vagus nerve is responsible for such varied tasks as heart rate, gastrointestinal peristalsis, sweating, and quite a few muscle movements in the mouth, including speech (via the recurrent laryngeal nerve) and keeping the larynx open for breathing (via action of the posterior cricoarytenoid muscle, the only abductor of the vocal folds). It also has some afferent fibers that innervate the inner (canal) portion of the outer ear, via the Auricular branch (also known as Alderman's nerve) and part of the meninges. This explains why a person may cough when tickled on the ear (such as when trying to remove ear wax with a cotton swab). source

The Market On Wednesday

Good morning. It is 16 degrees and sunny here in Upstate NY. We have no other choice but to be patient with the blast of polar air that is blanketing a lot of the country. It is a frigid blast. Meanwhile the pace at which we are getting more daylight each day is picking up. The birds are thinking spring, and it's nice to hear some of the familiar voices out there. It's hard to be patient with the cold, it is for me, spring is around the corner.

At 8:35 a.m. ET futures are modestly higher and the price of oil per barrel is up. The market is poised to open a little higher.

Investors will be parsing a slew of corporate reports and data on new home sales today. But in my opinion the real mover will be the testimony of new Fed Reserve Chair Janet Yellen later today. The Federal Reserve is the biggest player on the block, the bank of last resort as it were, and Yellen's words are as fluid as any currency.

CNN: Stocks: Holding steady as earnings flow
Investors are also awaiting testimony from Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen on Thursday, which is likely to affect market sentiment.

The Market On Tuesday

Good morning. It is 18 degrees with some clouds here in Upstate NY. This is not the week for a break in the cold temperatures and a glimpse of spring. No, it's been a severe winter even affecting the economy with some predicting that the GDP for this period will be short a half point all due to the cold. People don't want to go out in the cold and do business, and in some areas of the country like Michigan it's the coldest it's been in decades. All told, we are hardy and of good nature, we can cope.

At 8:25 a.m ET futures are moderately lower and the price of oil per barrel is down. The market is poised to open lower.

Investors have once again brought the indexes into record high territory. The sense is that some type of ground swell around this present trading range has to build to catapult the indexes into even higher territory. Everything I am reading suggests that the economy will be strong enough in 2014 to do this. Who knows but the next trading range would be the DOW hitting the 17,000 area. Predictions anyone?

The Market On Monday

Good morning. It is 27 degrees and somewhat sunny here in Upstate NY. I hope you had a restful weekend and now it's back to the weekly grind. Grind we shall.

Good morning. It is 37 degrees and overcast with some light rain here in Upstate NY. It's a classic Upstate gray day. There's a sun behind all that gray, don't forget. The Market On Thursday

Good morning. It is 32 degrees and mostly sunny this morning here in Upstate NY. The weather logo is predicting rain today and temperatures in the 40s. That will be the warmest it's been around here in a while as an extremely harsh February Winter has blanketed the Northeast. The rain mixed with the huge piles of snow and above freezing temperatures will make for wet basements and lots of slush. The good news is we are not lacking for water. On a personal note, I've been imposing a personal fast on my computer activity. After some reflection it occurs to me that I don't want to spend my excess time sitting in front of the computer gathering in its informational wisdom. The internet is great but communication through it is stunted and incomplete. I was talking with a stranger in a coffee shop the other day and it occurred to me that a transcript of our conversation would not even fit on a Facebook post where " I like that" substitutes for conversation.   At 8:15 a.m. ET futures are moderately lower and the price of oil per barrel is down. The market is poised to open lower.

Investors will be parsing all kinds of data today on inflation, jobs, corporate reports, and such. The morning seems most affected by a negative report on manufacturing in China. The Market On Wednesday

Good morning. It is -7 degrees and sunny here in Upstate NY. That is ouch ouch cold. The weather logos are promising warmer temperatures in the next few days and I even see a number in the 40s in six days. Okay I hope someone's not putting that there just to keep our spirits up. The South is totally freaked about an impending ice storm, as we know. Nature is making good on the  promise of stronger more intense weather events.

At 7:30 a.m. ET futures are flat and the price of oil per barrel is up. The market is poised to open flat to slightly higher.

Yellen spoke on Tuesday and investors loved what she said. As a result the market has rallied with the DOW even briefly crossing over 16K yesterday. That may happen again today as there is the appearance of a temporary sense of relief about the Fed's monetary policy. Not only that, but lately I'm also reading that the notion that 2014 will be a strong year for stocks is also re-arising. It's virtually impossible to predict the market's direction, in one sense speculation of any kind is a moot point. All we can do is put our ears to the ground and try to interpret the tea leaves.

The Market On Tuesday

Good morning. It is -3 degrees and partly clear here in Upstate NY. Okay, okay, the frigid cold is lingering a little bit longer than we would like maybe, but it'll pass. The sun is rising in the sky and staying out there longer and longer, so the warmth will come. That's a fact. Shirley Temple Black has passed away. She was an institution, literally a pillar for my generation. The older generation will miss her and the younger generations may or may not learn about her. All things pass, the world keeps changing, and at some point you recognize that this happens much faster than you once thought.

At 7:50 a.m. ET futures are moderately higher and the price of oil per barrel is up. The market is poised to open higher.

Investors are very interested in hearing what new Fed Chair Janet Yellen will be saying this morning. They will be literally hanging on every word and listening carefully for specific ideas on how the Fed will approach the next financial period. With job creation practically stalling out, can the Fed do anything more to stimulate the corporate economy. Here's what I think. Investors want more quantitative easing as do corporations. The corporate economy stands to do very well with cheap plentiful liquidity but that might not really translate into new jobs, just better looking balance sheets. There needs to be a new industrial revolution in the green economy and use the central idea of renewable resources as the theme for this revolution. This is where job creation needs to be.

The Market On Monday

Good morning. It is 15 degrees and sunny here in Upstate NY. We are into a slight warming trend and by that I mean that the temperatures are not down below zero. Technically there are only 37 days left till the first day of spring. Hey we can do 37 days of hard time standing on our heads. With the sun getting higher and higher in the sky, an afternoon walk feels goods, the sun will keep you warm even in the cold. The daylight is creeping back and most afternoon return home commutes are in the light not the dark. I'm itchy for spring, the garden plans are being drawn up. It's a great richness to be able to go out to the garden and pick vegetables for the meal.

At 8:00 a.m. ET futures are moderately lower and the price of oil per barrel is down. The market is poised to open lower.

Not a lot has changed, investors are looking over fourth quarter corporate reports and are sizing up the tapering down of quantitative easing. Off To Another Planet Or See Ya Later Armageddon Maker

Okay, I've heard several people say the same thing to me recently and I have to take it to task. People are telling me that humans have messed up the planet so badly that we have to somehow or other get humanity off onto another planet in order to continue as a species. Okay, let's think about this a second.
Even if this were somehow possible to do at point 'a' in the future, who exactly do you think would go off to this other planet? I will tell you who will go off to this planet. It would be the same people who are presently intimately involved with messing up this planet. I mean I seriously doubt a group of Quakers from Idaho are going to band together and buy a spacecraft and send it off to planet 'x' where they promise to grow their own vegetables, live in huts, not make any cars, and just pray and think peaceful thoughts all day long, year after year. Nope, they are not going. Who would go would be corporate megabuck bigwigs because they could bank it and set the terms. And guess what happens on plant 'x'? The same, the exact same thing happens, the same exploitation and environmental degradation. What great spiritual leap would have also somehow magically occurred that gets people into another place without the baggage of humanity's greedy irresponsible flaws?
Here is my point. It is imperative for us to get active now, right here. There's no magical solution, no other planet, no exploitation free zones.

  Recapping - get active now.

Chistie's CPAC Invite

Politico: David Axelrod: Chris Christie scandal led to CPAC invite

Advice

"I don't know what to tell you. A statement is easy, and here it is: Be yourself. Try to matter. Be a good friend. Love freely, even if you are likely--almost guaranteed--to be hurt, betrayed. Do what you were created to do. You'll know what this is, because it is what you keep creeping up to, peering at, dreaming of. Do it. If you don't, you'll be punching clocks and eating time doing precisely what you shouldn't, and you'll become mean and you'll seek to punish any and all who appear the slightest bit happy, the slightest bit comfortable in their own skin, the slightest bit smart. Cruelty is a drug, as well, and it's all around us. Don't imbibe.

"Try to matter. Try to care. And never be afraid to admit that you just don't know, you just don't fucking know how you're going to make it. That's when the help--the human and the divine help--shows up." - Tennessee Williams/Interview with James Grissom/1982

Good morning and welcome to the weekend. It is -3 degrees and sunny here in Upstate NY. The weather logos indicate that we are in for a solid week of super cold lows and you thought we had enough of that already. In spite of the cold the sun is getting higher in the sky and the daylight is returning bit by bit. We are gaining slightly more than 2 1/2 minutes of daylight at this point. Now this is winter.

Here's something I definitely did not know. When you breathe through your nose, not your mouth, your nasal passages produce nitric oxide which aids in how we absorb oxygen into the body. The Market On Thursday

Good morning. It is 18 degrees and cloudy with some sun here in Upstate NY. I was hoping for that post snow storm brilliant clear sunny day, maybe later on this afternoon we'll get some of that. Recapping, there are three stories that at present have my attention. That would be Christie's bridge-gate which has implications right to the White House, California's drought which is huge in consequence and probably related to the reshaping of weather patterns, and finally the instability in the stock market as a consequence of the winding down of quantitative easing. Of these three it is the drought that is the most demanding issue. Without a sustainable world environment the machinations of money and power are nothing but a moot point.

At 8:10 a.m. ET DOW futures are moderately higher and the price of oil per barrel is up. The market is poised to open higher.

Without the benefit of an accurate crystal ball which sees into the future, one might presume that the recent downward trend is a market correction. Perhaps we get 4 days of losses and one of gains, who knows, but the recent trend has been down with the DOW losing over 1,000 points in the past weeks. Eventually quantitative easing will end, the markets will have to adjust to the loss of ultra abundant and cheap liquidity, and the merits of the economy have to stand up on its own two feet so to speak. That process is just beginning to unfold.

CNN: Stocks: Looking steady, except for Twitter
Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital, said that markets could have a tough time holding onto gains, since they're in a "market correction" mode with a "negative bias."

The Market On Wednesday

Good morning. It is 26 degrees and furiously snowing here in Upstate NY. We've already gotten several inches of snow. There are school closings and such, the snowfall continues until 6 tonight. Please drive safely and keep plenty of space between your car and the next guy's. It's a very fine type of snow, dry, powdery, not big and heavy. Skiers will enjoy this.

At 8:10 a.m. ET futures are slightly lower and the price of oil per barrel is up. The market is poised to open in the mixed area except...

At 8:15 a.m. ET ADP will release its reading of job creation in January. The big government report on jobs created will be released on Friday and with the market in correction mode, this will be huge. Unfortunately we sort of know the answer as no recent month has really popped out with an impressive number of new jobs. It's more along the lines of hoping that the report will not be attrocious. It's possible that the market could revolve around the ADP report.

CNN: Stocks: Slowing down to assess damage
Payroll processor ADP will release its monthly figures on private-sector employment at 8:15 a.m. ET. That report is often considered a barometer of what to expect from the government's key monthly jobs report, due out early Friday.

The Market On Tuesday

Good morning. It is 21 degrees with some sunshine here in Upstate NY. We are expected to get walloped with snow starting around midnight tonight and lasting through Wednesday. As much as I dislike the snow, this is a really good thing. We need the water and the plants need the root insulation. Maybe I can bust out the cross country skies and try my hand at maneuvering the mean suburban streets before the plows mess it up with salt.

At 8:25 a.m. ET futures are moderately higher and the price of oil per barrel is higher. The market is poised to open higher.

As we know the market has been in correction mode with the DOW dropping nearly 1,000 points since the announcement of more quantitative easing tapering followed by investors pulling out of peripheral economies. The morning article is optimistic but recall that yesterday DOW futures were similarly higher and the market severely tumbled to the close. It's impossible to predict but hopefully calmer minds will prevail.

The Market On Monday

Good morning. It is 31 degrees and overcast here in Upstate NY. Mostly all of the remaining snow from the last storm of a few weeks ago is now gone. All that remains is the icy crusty remnants of snow pushed into piles by plows. The ground is brown and pretty hard. I suspect this is how winter is going to look around here from now on. We'll get the occasional snowstorm but most of the time there's no snow, it's like a dreary colder extension of the fall. Our memories of snow cover will fade. Regrettably this evening we will attend the wake of a much too young family friend who tragically died on Friday. We'll miss him, always remember to appreciate your many blessings.

At 8:20 a.m. ET futures are modestly higher and the price of oil per barrel is up. The market is poised to open slightly higher.

The same Wall Street elements from last week remain in effect. With the tapering down of quantitative easing, the global economy is now adjusting to the reality of less cheap fluid easy liquidity. Beyond that there is a continuing wave of fourth quarter corporate reports along with a few reports on the overall health of the economy, in particular construction and manufacturing. There's a lot to juggle there and where the market closes at 4 is anyone's guess.

CNN: Stocks: No sign of a rebound
...U.S. Census Bureau will release its monthly report on construction spending at 10 a.m. ET.

Many emerging markets have suffered over the past few weeks as investors have moved money out of riskier markets in favor of relative safe havens.

Basketball players are constantly wrecking knees and ankles, and I so much enjoy cheering for the NY Knicks, so yes there is hypocrisy in my statement. I'll be the first to admit it.
