Labor Day

Can you believe its September 1st. Summertime is in its last days and the cooler, extremely delicious weather of early fall is approaching. This is my favorite time of the year. Its crispy, apple-y, and tingly. The light is like cream frosting and gold mixed into one.

As I write this Gustav is about to hit land but its downgraded to a level 2 hurricane. Hopefully the destructive force will be less, hopefully no one is fatally injured, and hopefully the after effects are limited and life can resume along the coast of Louisiana.

We have our Presidential campaign battle almost on the verge of going full bore. The Republicans still need to make it a matter of record. Gustav is putting a damper on their celebration as well. By the end of the week, McCain will be officially appointed.

Its going to be a testy campaign. The Republicans have time honed the ability to throw a wrench into the Democratic effort. They are very adept at the all is fair in politics approach. The Rovian malady is virulent, divisive, honor-less, and an accepted part of the American landscape. The media doesn't just question this, it loves to play along. Let the real smearing begin.

Obama seems a little bit more savvy and willing to call out the Republicans on the smears. The Democrats like to self destruct, but Obama's campaign is very good at keeping its focus.

The reasons for McCain's selection of Palin are much more clear to us. Palin is the part of the ticket that will help to capture the right wing conservative religious fundamentalist vote. She is anti-choice, pro-gun, anti-gay, anti-global warming, and anti-evolution. In short she is an ideal fundamentalist candidate.

Palin will be less visible than Biden. Palin will work the bible belt circuits and the leaning states that hold the possibility of victory through fundamentalist turnout. She will rarely campaign in the East and West. She will debate Biden and because the audience is half Republican, she will receive thundering applause. TV will leave the impression that she is a sound candidate.

Palin has received a ringing endorsement from essential neo-conservative William Kristol. The neocons applaud this selection.

The writers at 'Sande' believe Palin to be the lightest of lightweights, and her selection to be an insult to the American people. Her experiential resume does not qualify her for the position. She has not walked the walk. She has not debated, campaigned, or done anything that tests her metal in the real national arena. She has not put forward her positions, her hopes for the country, her 'vision,'- nothing.

Palin is also the 'lightning rod.' She will attract criticism away from McCain. Campaigns are won by the Presidential candidate alone. So the extent of the criticism extended to Palin cannot be too much. At the moment, she is not relevant. If McCain is elected, we will deal with the possibility that she may very well become president. McCain is 72 and a four time cancer patient. Let's try to set that one aside for now. We have a clear sense of the type of politics that McCain will play. Right now, Palin is not relevant.

The focus is on Obama versus McCain.

O is going to win this one. The problem for any GOP team this fall is that America is tired of 8 yrs. of relentlessly bad news under this regime. BV$H I had the opposite situation in 88' he had 8 yrs. of the smiling Cowboy on horse back to follow. McSame has what? Palin might get out some of the winnuttery and she might not? Even significant parts of this crowd are not going to vote this fall. Simple truth is they don't like or trust McCain. This group NEVER forgets nor forgives an insult. Same will be true on the D side with some portion of the Hillary crowd sitting out as well. Here's the problem for McPain they are many more D's then R's at this juncture and O's ground game is legendary. The street organizer has the ball now and he's going to run out the clock on the sky pilot and his little wingnut cheerleader.

At this point, you are describing the momentum. We see this. The real dirty trick s are still coming. Who knows how they hit the fan. But I would agree, O looks solid.

Yea, the dirty shit is up ahead for sure. The D's have to know that at this juncture don't they? The question is how to game such moves. The GOP is real good at getting you in a position where if you answer the smear your damned and if you don't your damned. The D's need to have a way around these moves , or else. I say the way around is get the GOP on the defense now. Full court press.

I would like to see the Democrats play dirty low down pig style smear campaign just like Rove. If you can't beat em, join em.
