Dire Warning

James Lovelock came up with the Gaia theory of a self-regulating massive organism called the Earth forty years ago.

Now he has no confidence that people can stop global warming, stating that we are too stupid and have to much inertia. Perhaps you agree, or disagree. If you disagree, is it because you think we are intelligent and are motivated, or do you disagree because you believe there is no global warming.

I think the headline this morning read that Obama wants to open up coastal areas for oil drilling.

Guardian UK: James Lovelock: Humans are too stupid to prevent climate change
"I don't think we're yet evolved to the point where we're clever enough to handle a complex a situation as climate change..."

Lovelock, 90, believes the world's best hope is to invest in adaptation measures, such as building sea defences around the cities that are most vulnerable to sea-level rises. He thinks only a catastrophic event would now persuade humanity to take the threat of climate change seriously enough, such as the collapse of a giant glacier in Antarctica, such as the Pine Island glacier, which would immediately push up sea level.

Sorry to say I agree with his analysis. It's not that some of us aren't smart enough or even aware enough. It's that so many others couldn't care less and many are hostile to any change that would forestall what's probably already a foregone conclusion. Maybe, this is Gaia's way to get rid of most of us to bring the planet back into balance?

I have a friend, and he lives in upstate NY like me, who said he figures he's living on future waterfront property. He's about 400 yards above the level of the Hudson.
