TPMtv - Orin Hatch On HCR Insurance Mandate

"The first time in history, the Federal government requires you to buy something you don't want."

Not defending the mandate at all here, I don't like it. But, just out of curiosity, how many people don't want health insurance? I would suspect the number is relatively tiny and out of that number there is unique reasoning. Also, I don't know if auto insurance if federally mandated but it certainly seems like it is required everywhere. It may be that it is a state requirement that is inclusive.

I don't like Hatch but he's right for some people. It's not right to FORCE people to buy a product where there isn't a real choice. It's ok to do it if it's a TAX because then it's at least a function of the State. Forcing us to buy someones PRIVATE product though is a very dangerous precedent. Maybe, the problem is many people in Gov't and in the Private sector are all for blurring the line as we've seen done with the Wall st. bail-outs and GM. We shouldn't be rewarding failure. The Health Ins. model is failing because they can only make money in the long run by denying care to their customers and by raising prices to the pt. that a large and growing part of the public can't even begin to be able to afford their policies anyway. Unable toconvince the young to buy their crap they've convinced the Gov't to be their collection agency and armed protection racket enforcers. Now u don't get a choice u buy or else! BUY this peasant or face the IRS! Guess who owns your body asshole, right NOT you! This is like the new movie out this week REPO man where people who can't make payments on their new Hearts or other replacement parts have them REPOed at gun pt. No more Mr. Nice guy folks WE the CORP. STATE own your sorry ass so pay up and don't be late either or else!
