An obvious visual metaphor for the enormous pressure in societies to blend in and disappear as an individual, especially in a Communist society like China. It's not that much different in Corporatist America today. As the Japanese like to say the nail that sticks out gets hammered flat.
Liu Bolin has been doing his Hiding in the City series since 2005. It started as a political commentary on the tensions between the Chinese government and their people and the identity an environment gives an individual and vice versa. I like that slogan and I use it all the time. My favorite are the ones where he is truly almost invisible. To me the work has resonance.
