Running barefoot on a sandy beach is not that easy. It's a good way to pull leg muscles because the sand has so much give. The whole notion was made popular by the Movie in the early 80's about the 1924 Olympics. Forget the name had the catchy tune and great performances. Anyway it's opening scene is a whole team of cross country racers running on some English beach. Since then it's a thing. Not as many people who are actual runners do it down here though and none of them barefoot.

Okay good to know, its more of a romantic notion than anything. I am back to running around the track at the Y. It takes 14 laps to do 1 mile. I wear running shoes too...

My goal is to do it 3 times a week, right now 2 to 3 miles at a time. I am working myself back into it slowly. Spent the winter doing about a 2.5 mile walk every day. I like running on the track.

I've been running on average about 3X's a week for about 1.5 yrs. now and I'm doing a 5K ( 3.3 miles) for time. I run on the boardwalk on nice sunny days and in the gym the rest of the time on a treadmill. My goal is mostly just to keep my cardio vascular system tuned and I've also lost about 20 pounds in that time. The running is good for toning, but the weight loss was through diet change and simply lowering caloric intake. The hard part is figuring out roughly what you need to stay healthy and what your metabolism is. The reason why people tend to gain weight as they age is complicated and somewhat individual, but it does feature one fact that most people confront. As we age we literally slow down and we don't move around as much, therefore we don't burn as many calories . Here's the catch though, most people also don't lower their caloric intake as this is happening and so they gradually expand. This can be reversed. I'm back down to the weight I was at when I was 45, but I have to work at it by adding in the running and as I said, lowering my caloric intake. The types of food you eat matter but for other reasons. One thing I urge all people over 40 to do is get your heart checked and especially get your cholesterol etc. checked. The most important no. to ask about when you do get these blood tests is what's called your PARTICLE size and no. You want to have large particles in size and you want as few as possible. Small particle size and lots of them is very dangerous and here's the rub, even if you have low or average bad ( LDL) Cholesterol nos. and high good (HDL) nos. if your particles are small and you have lots of them your still in the danger zone for heart disease. I have naturally small ones and lots of them but I take Niacin (B-3) to change this situation and so far so good. The problem with taking high doses of B-3 is it can whack your liver , so I have my liver enzymes tested every 3 mos. and a liver scan once a yr.

Excellent information GK. I am learning how to try to eat less as my weight jumped ten pounds real fast. I am seeing some results finally.

Curious to know but what is your daily dose of B3?
