Distinctly Islamic, in the Persian Shia tradition. The religious Sunni traditions do not allow any representation of people in their art. You'll never ever see a picture of Mohammad in the Arab world even in more secular countries like Turkey they are forbidden. It's actually, a BIG sticking pt. between these the two largest of the various Islamic factions. ISIS and the Taliban destroy any such art or antiquities when they get control of an area ( IMO a crime against humanity.)
This artist is from Pakistan and I've heard from Pakistani friends that there are areas in that country that are more open, more 'western'. Still, this work is very gentle in my opinion. Compare it to bold American work which is often times given credibility because of the artist's ability to generate very cutting and striking images freely using sexual and violent themes.
