No Habeus For You

The move to bring back the right of habeus corpus in respect to the enemy combatant has failed.

Senate Blocks Detainees’ Rights Bill

The legal concept of habeas corpus (“You have the body” in Latin) dates back to medieval England, and is meant to protect people from being locked up indefinitely without a court review. Last year, Congress passed and President Bush signed an act eliminating the right of habeas corpus for non-Americans who are labeled “enemy combatants” in the continuing campaign against terrorism.

Without a doubt this is a significantly ugly situation. If there are any core American values this is one.

Lieberman along with only Republican senators voted against habeus corpus. The Republican Party has the reputation of diminishing democratic principles, no matter how you parse it, this is the case.

At present the Congress and Senate seem content with an authoritarian ruler and the American people are complacently unaware and disinterested.
