More On The Afghanistan Surge

We like Obama but the certainty of the decision to escalate in Afghanistan is questionable.

Yahoo: Afghanistan could see 30,000 new US troops
...only improvements in Afghanistan's governance and economic situation will affect the strength of the insurgency.
UK Telegraph: More than two thirds of people in Britain believe that UK troops should leave Afghanistan within a year, a poll has found.

My sense is that they want to have it as a base to invade Pakistan.

They are already staging attacks into Pakistan, so this is amping it up.

Pakistan is another waste of time. Bombing these places just kills lots of poor fuckers that in 99% cases have nada too do with the few lice causing us some harm now and then. All of it IMHO is like an elephant trying to stomp on fire ants. The ants are annoying but they rarely if ever kill any elephants. Better too send in the specialists and stop using jets, bombs and helicopters. They need too send in special ops guys on surgical removals of well identified targets, not whole villages because of some third hand rumor from a guy with a grievance against his neighbors family that's 300 yrs. old.

Chomsky said the same thing a while back. He said you don't use a military invasion to go after terrorists. He said use local authorities backed with intelligence. The problem here is that this counts on the local authorities being just and impartial. Generally I would agree, why send in the military to round up a few. If two people from Boston went to Atlantic City and blew up a bomb, you don't seek justice by blowing up Boston. This is how the US has been doing it though.
