Dandelions are not native to north america. They were actually brought over from Europe and cultivated for their food and medicinal purposes. Excellent sautéed, excellent fermented for wine, and beautiful to look at. And yet nowadays they are seen as an invasive scourge. I remember seeing a neighbor with a spray bottle of herbicide, walking around his property, crouching and squirting the flowers, in his pursuit of a "perfect" lawn.
Several years ago we purchased a non-gas-powered push reel mower. It's quiet, non-polluting, and reminds me of my childhood, the days before noisy power tools were the norm for every outdoor task.
The deer love the dandelions. Our last dog used to run on a field of dandelions and bite one off and eat it as he ran - very innocent. I've noticed that they are all back today less than 24 hours after being cut. That's a plant that knows how to survive.
