The Market On Friday
Good morning. It is a chilly 35 degrees and sunny here in the Upper Hudson Valley. A sunny day is expected. Well, after being blown out of Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night, the Knicks rallied and beat the Cavaliers last night. Sports analysts will be wondering how this occurred for the next several days. The Knicks' bench was very good and outscored the Cavaliers' bench by around 40 points. That is huge. The Cavaliers played their team of exceptional starters for an ungodly number of minutes and I suspect those guys were exhausted. Maybe there is some hope. Personally I expected the Knicks to get blown out for a second time.

Investors are pleased to see that the Bank of Japan is picking up where the Fed left off in promoting it's own further version of quantitative easing. This is rallying this morning's futures. Regardless, it's been a strange week and now we can look forward to the weekend.

Good morning. It is 46 degrees and sunny here in the Upper Hudson Valley. Sunshine is predicted for today and tomorrow. Well last night's first game of the season was a disaster for my Knicks. It was so bad that I actually had to turn it off. The Knicks were not just bad, they were horrible. The Chicago Bulls literally ate them alive. Today they fly to Cleveland to get trounced once again in tonight's match-up. It's not our year Knicks fans, it's not our year.

There are so many things happening in the economic realm at the moment, one wonder how anyone can make sense of it all. Fresh third quarter GDP number came in this morning with the US economy allegedly growing at a rate of 3.5% - whatever the hell that truly means, seriously it's a very profoundly flawed measure. Nevertheless, it's a solid number. First time layoff numbers for the last week were at 287,000 which still suggests an improving job market. Then the world as always is partially collapsing under the weight of immense hubris and greed. Plus quantitative easing is now officially over. Add it all up and the weekend can't come soon enough.

The Market On Wednesday
Good morning. It is 58 degrees and raining here in the Upper Hudson Valley. Rain is now expected right through the weekend, so much for a sunny week. Well today is the big day, the Knicks' season opener is tonight in MSG against the Bulls. I don't really expect a whole lot from the team this year as they are clearly in transition but my number one source of entertainment is back. I look forward to sitting on the couch and playing my guitar, yelling at the players as they fumble through it all, and occasionally roaring in approval. Now we're talking.

Good morning. It is 50 degrees and hazy cloudy here in the Upper Hudson Valley. The forecast is showing more sun this coming week after last week's daily rain pattern. I hope you had a good relaxing weekend. The Fall has kicked into a higher gear. My good news is that the rebuilt wall in my living room is now fully insulated and my heating system is back on line. The house is already much warmer from the insulation. Next comes sheetrock, taping, trim work, and painting. Eventually we'll put in a new replacement window as well. It's been an intense couple of weeks surrounding this project and now I can take a breather.

Man, talk about adding insult to injury. Here's where we pay the price for our previous actions. Good morning. It is 45 degrees and rainy here in the Upper Hudson Valley. The rain is expected to clear on Saturday. Well I rushed through all of the work on my house necessary for the plumber to come today and do his work in reconnecting the heating system. But there's a little problem, it's raining and the rain prevents the PVC pipe from fusing properly. Some of the work has to occur external to the house. I was rushing around through the early evening last night completely exhausting myself and it turns out I didn't have to do that. The plumber is now rescheduled for Saturday.

Fear still seems to be dominating the market as investors now grapple with an Ebola case right down the road from Wall Street, literally. The fear from Ebola is of course at present over-stated but I did read an article last night which discusses how the virus could very well mutate into one that is in fact air born. I mean the virus has managed to get itself all around the world now, why not go through a few million quick mutations. Regardless, barring a late rally, it looks like Wall Street is in for a bummer day.

I just saw the weekly first time layoff number - 283,000. That's still pretty good and points to a little more opening in the job market. I was shocked to see the market take an extraordinary dive at the end of Wednesday's session. I haven't looked into the reasoning for it but I suspect the calamity in Canada might have been part of the it. Investors will continue to parse third quarter corporate results today and the market correction or rebound will take on more definition by closing.

Good morning. It is 48 degrees and rainy here in the Upper Hudson Valley. Rain is expected throughout the week and that's a bummer for me because I have to do exterior work on the house. The activity level in the neighborhood is really picking up as people rush to get last minute work done to their houses before the snow flies. We see that Oscar Pistorius got 5 years for murdering his girlfriend. Seems pretty light to me, he can ask for parole in 10 months. That whole case seemed at best terribly sketchy and suspicious.

Notice that the price of oil is up a small amount and oil's recent last few week price decline parallels the correction as it were. As it is third quarter corporate report period maybe the fundamentals of the US economy will start taking a more prominent position.

Meditation, Neuroplasticity, Health Benefits
Check this out - it was posted on a friend's wall on Facebook. The friend is a nurse.
I'm reading a nurse CE about meditation. :" Data have shown that people who meditated 40 minutes a day had a thicker cerebral cortex (the area playing a critical role in decision-making) than people who did not meditate.17 This research suggests that daily meditation can alter the physical structure of the brain, and it may have positive applications related to aging, such as enhanced memory. Meditation has been shown to produce significant increases in left-sided anterior brain activity, which is associated with positive emotional states. Neuronal firings in the amygdala have been associated with positive emotions and have led researchers to discover and measure the connection between the brain’s lighted activity centers and mood.18 (Level B) Not only did this map brain activity, but it also took the concept of neuroplasticity a step further by showing that meditation may change the mapping of brain circuitry. In a recent review, researchers say that meditation may be of benefit to adults with cognitive impairment, such as Alzheimer disease, but more research is needed." also this: "Meditation is being incorporated into many clinical practices by teams of healthcare providers. By reducing stress and developing concentration, meditation can not only increase concentration but also may help prevent job burnout.36 (Level C) The result is a better relationship with patients and perhaps a method for self-healing."

The Market On Wednesday
Good morning. It is 70 degrees and overcast here in the Upper Hudson Valley. Rain is expected. The headlines point to another case of Ebola down in Texas. Let's get realistic, there's probably going to be many more cases and the disease is powerful and deadly as you know. We all feel the pressure of it because we all already exist with a certain amount of societal pressure - money, housing, politics, war, health care, aging etc etc etc. This unfortunately adds another layer of pressure to our existence. But the good news is that humanity is resilient and adaptive. I also think that humanity is fundamentally compassionate. We can adjust and figure it out. AIDS scared the hell out of us in the early 80s and now it's barely mentioned in the news.

I'm taking the weekend off from blogging. I'll see you bright and early on Monday morning and have an excellent weekend. Do check out Lorde singing with Nirvana at the band's 2014 Rock n Roll Hall of Fame induction.

The Market On Friday
Good morning. It is 46 degrees and sunny here in the Upper Hudson Valley. A sunny and pleasant Fall weekend is expected. What a day we had on Thursday. There was a multiple family murder in the area. Apparently the family was Asian and the police had a difficult time literally translating information. It's a tragedy in an otherwise extremely safe area. We all need the weekend right this instant.
At 8:50 a.m. ET futures are moderately lower and the price of oil per barrel is down. The market is poised to open lower.
What can I say. It's the weekend enjoy it and try to forget about the fact that the market is shedding trillions of dollars of value over the last few weeks. The correction is here, the global economy is having a conniption, and the pain will probably continue till reason once again prevails. On the other hand, people who have been waiting on the sidelines to invest in the stock market, pay attention because when things get really ugly then you purchase equities.

European markets were trading weaker as investors remain rattled by a string of poor economic numbers from Germany, and slower global growth. There was more disappointing data Friday, this time from Italy...

The Market On Thursday
Good morning. It is 54 degrees and sunny here in the Upper Hudson Valley. It looks like we are in for one of those especially gorgeous early Fall days. We are very sorry to see Thomas Duncan pass away from Ebola in Texas and we feel for his family. Besides that grief, his death certainly opens up new fears about the disease and how well we can or cannot treat it. I mean if the USA offers the best treatment and he dies, what does this say.

I can't explain today's pre-market numbers. Perhaps the day will take on the complexion of yesterdays massive rally or perhaps not. With the Fed practically guaranteeing low interest rates into the future and with Alcoa posting a significant third quarter profit, one might think that the fear could rest a bit.

The Market On Wednesday
Good morning. It is 60 degrees and sunny here in the Upper Hudson Valley. It did rain through the night, maybe that's the end of the rain for a while. Well today is the big day. After enduring a painful several month absence, the NY Knicks resume basketball play tonight. It is a pre-season game, a test as it were, against the Boston Celtics. Not a real lot is expected from either team this year although it will be interesting to see the Knicks run the triangle offense under the direction of new team president Phil Jackson and head coach Derek Fisher. My evening is pretty well blocked out, I don't even answer the phone.
At 8:40 a.m. ET futures are modestly higher and the price of oil per barrel is down. The market is poised to open higher.
As you know the market has tumbled a bit over the last few weeks. Today begins the third quarter corporate report season and as these reports come in perhaps there will be more of a sense of why, instead the present instability. Notice that the Fed will also be releasing a minutes report this afternoon and as the Fed sets monetary policy in so many ways, this is also a big deal.

The Market On Tuesday
Good morning. It is 63 degrees and overcast here in the Upper Hudson Valley. Rain is expected. I've already been out there raking leaves and there's a ton more to come. How about that young teen heading over to join ISIS. Seriously, what an idiot, teens do stupid things but this is a topper for sure. I guess if a person has no prospects of a relationship, no real sense of getting a decent job, then the promise of a female sex slave and glory in battle might seems appealing. Want to fix the ISIS problem - figure out a way to decrease the testosterone in these young idiots.
At 8:50 a.m. ET futures are moderately lower and the price of oil per barrel is down. The market is poised to open lower.
Notice that the price of oil is now down below $90 per barrel. This can only mean one thing, that soon it's going to go up. Germany is beginning to show a little wear and tear with it's profoundly strong economy. This reality is affecting this morning's market direction. Like it or not, the market is having a correction of sorts, how long and how deep - that's another story. Still it will be third quarter corporate reports that will add depth to the conversation.

The Bombshell Vote
He's Going 'Round The Bend Again And Again
It's one thing that this individual each day stuffs this level of nonsense or worse into the fragile minds of the willfully ignorant in our country, I mean basically who the hell cares. But it's quite another thing that those same willfully ignorant people vote and that voting has an effect on you and me.

The Market On Monday
Good morning. It is a very cool 44 degrees and it is sunny here in the Upper Hudson Valley. The forecast predicts a general lowering in the temperatures throughout the week and as you know, the daylight is shrinking noticeably. October is moving along and before you know it, we're into Halloween, I'm sure you're seeing the Halloween ornaments and signs all over. I hope you had a good relaxing weekend. This household is battling a severe cold, there's a lot of coughing and sneezing going on. Society has convinced us that money is our most important attribute so we struggle against that meme throughout our lives trying to recognize something that carries more meaning. In that struggle we tend to ignore the incredible assets we already have like our health, a sense of well being, and our love and compassion for others. Hopefully at some point we can give up the struggle and make a greater peace with these more meaningful attributes.
At 7:50 a.m. ET futures are moderately higher and the price of oil per barrel is up. The market is poised to open higher.
Two major corporate developments appear to be positively influencing the market this morning. That would be HP dividing into two separate divisions and the big med merger between Becton and CareFusion. ISIS, Ebola, the Ukraine and Russia, plus a serious amount of risk fear remain in the background, but for the time being the market is buoyant this early morning.
