Well the sign would be a stop sign from the car's side looking out to us, the viewers. Its a lot like the rest of the painting in that the sign is muted, stopped in this improbable instant as well. Its really the object of a painting or a photo where you stop an image allegedly at its most interesting position and composition for eternity or at least until you can sell it. Its a commentary about the place of painting. The artist is wondering what he is doing.

The one with the flying car, why did he compose it so that the sign post would be obscured by the leg? That would drive me crazy.
