The majority of Americans (76%) identify themselves as Christians, mostly within Protestant and Catholic denominations, accounting for 51% and 25% of the population respectively. Non-Christian religions (including Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism), collectively make up about 3.9% to 5.5% of the adult populationRoughly 25% of the American population is Catholic.
I do not know in what way the religion is changing as a result of the sex abuse scandals that continue to be revealed. The culture of sex abuse within the Catholic Church is large to say the least.

Most of the alleged victims were Native Americans and many of the alleged offences occurred on native reservations and remote villages, where the order was accused of dumping problem priests.
