Large Red Palm Weevil In Italy

I am well aware of the damage that insects can do to the environment. Italy is facing a weevil infestation that is devouring the country's palm trees. The budget cuts and insolvency issues within Italy will spare the weevils.

I am facing termite damage to this old house. Slowly but surely we are working our way around the house, replacing and repairing the damage. Its hard work, but its also fun.

Christian Science Monitor: Voracious tree-eating beetles invade Italy
Place your ear against the smooth trunk of a palm tree, and you may actually hear them.

In Sicily it has killed an estimated 13,000 palms and has pushed north, attacking trees in Campania and Rome, and all the way up to the famed Italian Riviera, near the border with France.

...there is, as of yet, no proven way of combating the insect.
