Obama nominee Elena Kagan's approval by a Senate committee was the first major hurdle on the way to becoming a Supreme Court judge.

The committee vote was 13 to 6, with all but one Republican committee member voting against her.Kagan must still be approved by the Senate.
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R) of South Carolina was the only senator to cross the aisle to support Ms. Kagan.
