I found the film to be very ethereal and dreamy. Its probably good fodder for some in depth examination of women, sexuality, and pre-feminist consciousness. Its almost like the ankles and legs being exposed is a seed ripening before feminism hits 40 to 50 years later.
The ankle thing was because of the Victorian eras dress codes didn't allow for any exposure of the bottom half of women in public. It was very Taliban like. The whole 20's was a reaction to the sexual mores of that era. Odd that women also helped ban alcohol with there new francise. The 20's were like a lot like the 80's IMHO. A mix of rebellion and religion all mixed up with hard right economics. Remember Reagan loved Coolidge.
