The Market On Friday

Good morning and welcome to the weekend. It is -3 degrees and sunny here in Upstate NY. The weather logos indicate that we are in for a solid week of super cold lows and you thought we had enough of that already. In spite of the cold the sun is getting higher in the sky and the daylight is returning bit by bit. We are gaining slightly more than 2 1/2 minutes of daylight at this point. Now this is winter.

At 8:15 a.m. ET futures are moderately higher and the price of oil per barrel is down. The market is poised to open mostly higher but some energy stocks may lag.

At 8:30 a.m. we get the monthly government jobs report. This is probably the most compelling bit of information that investors will parse today and it may very well set the tone for the indexes. On the other hand one never knows what surprise ameliorating factor can arise that could take precedence over the report. I'm just trying to cover my tracks. Regardless most are betting the report will best last month's by a mile. Stay warm.

The U.S. government is set to release its monthly jobs report at 8:30 a.m. ET.
