Slight Drop

Investors parsed the government's hard data on employment in July, spent the day selling, and ended the day with the market only slightly down. Stranger things have happened...

For the week, though, the three major U.S. stock indexes ended higher.


For the day, based on the latest available data, the Dow Jones industrial average slipped 21.42 points, or 0.20 percent, to end unofficially at 10,653.56.
