I don't see that.
The current budget is a mere $655 billion, while Gates is proposing a budget of $664 billion for 2010. That is an increase of $14 billion, which is what, chump change?
I guess nuclear weapons are not off the table this year or next. Did the neocon cadre corner Obama, apply the increase military spending vaccine, and then go bomb some pristine country for practice.
Bottom line is this, the military budget is preposterously huge. Every politician comes in determined to increase it so they can bring weapons jobs back to their communities. This is not considered welfare or stimulus job creation, of course. Its just get it done good old boy stuff.
CNN: Gates announces major Pentagon priority shifts
...boosting special operations personnel by 2,800, or 5 percent...
The proposed overall fiscal year 2010 Defense Department budget is almost $534 billion, or nearly $664 billion when including the costs of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The current Pentagon budget totals slightly over $513 billion, or almost $655 billion including the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts.

I think they're afraid if they cut the military too deep in the midst of the present calamity this will make things even worse. We've now arrived at the Soviet Union's dilemma in the 80's. Even with huge military budgets our so called private economy is tanking. Part of the reason is companies like Lockheed Martin, Northrup, Grumann , Boeing and others exist almost solely from Federal $$$ and are really too big to fail... U get the picture.
Part of the problem is that the resources spent on the military don't circulate around in the economy. If you build a hospital the money circulates over time. Build a nuclear bomb and it sits there.
