McCain said that while Isis “can do terrible things and I worry a lot about what is happening with the Muslim faith ... but it’s the Russians who tried to destroy the fundamental of democracy and that is to change the outcome of an American election”.

Here's the problem. The whole Frame has shifted and most people are still just catching up. In the minds of many people, Russia is still seen within an old Cold War context as a Communist State like when it was the main Republic of the old dissolved Soviet Union. Russia today or the Russian Federation is not the same as the old Soviet State. Russia today is a Right wing Nationalist State it's also NOT a democracy by our standards even though it has a Constitution and a Duma ( Congress). It's an Authoritarian State with a quasi-Dictator V. Putin where almost all power is concentrated to the top. Putin is more like an old Soviet Dictator than a modern democratic President he's held power for 17 yrs. It's the Russia of Putin that is popular with many of Trump's following. However, that's not the case with the Nat'l Security State and many in both parties who decidedly do not like or trust Russian and it's President. So when we see this none concern trolling from the Trumpians it's because they like Putin and Russia and want us to be more like them.
Yes, they want their goals imposed on all of us. This works across many sectors of the GOP - from the born again xtian anti-abortion gay marriage crowd to the military crowds to the white power crowds to the billionaires who want everyone's money. This is a f-ing mess of monstrous proportion and somebody better step the fuck up and push these damn investigations right back up and exposing the stink hole they dropped out of. Trump must be impeached .
