For me the methodology of the instructor is not meaningful and it's weak. 20th Century art, music, theater, writing, all cultural expressions are extremely vibrant and equal to any preceding century. The arts run in parallel to society and all of society's extreme ranges of movement - world wars, new discoveries, medical advances, psychological understanding like Freud and Jung, freedom movements like civil rights/equality/socialism/democracy/etc. All art arises in a context, to remove art from it's cultural context and then evaluate next to an art in it's cultural context is like transporting you or me back 10,000 years and complaining about how we don't seem to be making it in a neolithic agrarian society, that we are lacking. Nothing is absolute, there is no perfect art. There is process, change, adaptation...
