Fortunately for many of the global warming deniers, there wasn't any 56 million years ago. Recall that for the deniers and this would include many GOPers in our Senate and Congress, human history is roughly 4,000 to 2,000 years old, so an article like this is already a moot point.

Its believed that might have been a methane related event. Unlike the Permian extinction though the PETA as its known among geologists only lasted a few hundred thousand yrs. till the atmosphere returned to a more normal state. The shocking part of that event though was its speed. It took place geologically speaking in a blink of an eye 1,500 yrs. Using that as a scale to measure with, our own rapid warming event is happening 10Xs faster.
I think getting at the big picture is not a real innate human motivation.
