EXXON and all the Fossil energy Corps. have known the basic science of the Greenhouse effect for 100 yrs. or more. It wasn't a secret then or now. It was just speculative science though because the hard data needed to back up the theory was still lacking. That isn't the case anymore, is it? The data is massive and detailed and the conclusions are ugly and underway as I write. EXXON is just trying to limit its liability like the Cigarette Corps. back in the 90's. Not only did EXXON know by the 70's but they knew in great detail and they did zip. Of course, they did zip whose surprised? The mafia kills people they know they kill people are they suppose to investigate themselves? I blame the regulators or lack thereof for what followed. EXXON is an OIL Corp. and they sell OIL and OIL products like Gasoline etc. they were never going to do anything and what they're doing now is just more of the same. Now however they are more than just a fossil energy Corp. they are essentially a criminal Enterprise.
