Good Night

My chiropractor told me that you can benefit from getting out in the daylight for 20 minutes even though it's cloudy. In these parts it's cloudy for days on end, still you need the exposure for the vitamin D connection.
Vitamin D deficiency can occur for a number of reasons:

You don't consume the recommended levels of the vitamin over time. This is likely if you follow a strict vegetarian diet, because most of the natural sources are animal-based, including fish and fish oils, egg yolks, cheese, fortified milk, and beef liver.

Your exposure to sunlight is limited. Because the body makes vitamin D when your skin is exposed to sunlight, you may be at risk of deficiency if you are homebound, live in northern latitudes, wear long robes or head coverings for religious reasons, or have an occupation that prevents sun exposure. source

The Market On Thursday

Good morning. It is 41 degrees and ever so slightly clearing here in Upstate NY. Early this morning we experienced very strong winds in this part of the world. They are reporting winds as high as 70 mph in Massachusetts this morning as well. I feared we would lose power, but amazingly nothing happened. There remains the tiniest remnant of snow, I'd say the ground is 99.7% snow free. Regardless it's nice to be heading into February and see a return of the light.

At 8:20 a.m. E.T. futures are flat and the price of oil per barrel is down. The market is poised to open slightly lower.

The bull market of January halted on Wednesday as the government released figures on a slightly shrinking economy with the GDP down to a negative.1% non growth. Austerity measures as we know are the worst possible way to work with the economy now, yet the GOP in its utterly fool headed way, continues to push austerity. One must assume this is occurring in an attempt to win the election in 2016. It's a hey, let's wreck the economy and blame everyone but ourselves idiot move.

Nutrients in oranges are plentiful and diverse. The fruit is low in calories, contains no saturated fats or cholesterol, but is rich in dietary fiber, pectin, which is very effective in persons with excess body weight. Pectin, by its action as a bulk laxative, helps to protect the mucous membrane of the colon by decreasing its exposure time to toxic substances as well as by binding to cancer-causing chemicals in the colon. Pectin has also been shown to reduce blood cholesterol levels by decreasing its re-absorption in the colon by binding to bile acids in the colon.

Oranges, like other citrus fruits, is an excellent source of vitamin C (provides 53.2 mg per 100 g, about 90% of DRI); Vitamin C is a powerful natural antioxidant. Consumption of foods rich in vitamin C helps the body develop resistance against infectious agents and scavenge harmful, pro-inflammatory free radicals from the blood.

Orange fruit contains a variety of phytochemicals. Hesperetin, naringin, and naringenin are flavonoids found in citrus fruits. Naringenin is found to have a bio-active effect on human health as antioxidant, free radical scavenger, anti-inflammatory, and immune system modulator. This substance has also been shown to reduce oxidant injury to DNA in vitro studies. Total antioxidant strength (ORAC) of oranges (navel variety) is 1819 µmol TE/100 g.

Oranges also contain very good levels of vitamin A, and other flavonoid antioxidants such as alpha and beta-carotenes, beta-cryptoxanthin, zea-xanthin and lutein. These compounds are known to have antioxidant properties. Vitamin A is also required for maintaining healthy mucus membranes and skin and is essential for vision. Consumption of natural fruits rich in flavonoids helps the body to protect from lung and oral cavity cancers.

It is also a very good source of B-complex vitamins such as thiamin, pyridoxine, and folates. These vitamins are essential in the sense that body requires them from external sources to replenish. source

The Market On Wednesday

Good morning. It is 43 degrees and damp here in Upstate NY. It's nice to go outside without having to wear ten extra layers of clothing. The forecast predicts that the temperature will go into the 50s later today and that would represent a 55 degree swing in temperatures in the last week. I think the latter is probably more like what we will experience in the winter from here on out, wide temperature swings and unseasonably warm periods as well.

At 7:50 a.m. futures are flat and the price of oil per barrel is up. The market is poised to open slightly higher.

Besides the rain of fourth quarter corporate reports, investors will be looking through all sorts of data on the economy. The primary piece in my opinion is the government's release of its first estimate of the fourth quarter GDP. That usually a big deal as we know. Otherwise notice that the DOW is perched right on the edge of 14,000 and that is a remarkable number. I guess our socialist/communist president has failed in his effort to bring down capitalism, it literally makes me laugh out loud when I hear this sort of nonsense form FOX and Limbaugh.

The Market On Tuesday

Good morning. It is 27 degrees and cloudy here in Upstate NY. The forecast has the temperature rising into the 40s later on today. That will definitely seem balmy compared to last week's zero temperatures. Each day we gain more than 2 minutes of light and it's beginning to be noticeable especially around 6:30 a.m. It's the return of the light.

At 8:00 a.m. E.T. futures are flat and the price of oil per barrel is slightly higher. The market is poised to open slightly higher.

Investors continue to parse fourth quarter corporate results with the majority of reports beating expectations, consequently pushing the indexes to surprisingly high levels. It's an unusual time in recent market history with the market percolating and a bit less volatile for the moment. Volatility has been a defining keyword for the stock market in the last 5 years, it's nice to have a short respite although one must presume that a correction is around the corner.

Good Night

I recently bought some cacao pieces to check out the pre-chocolate chocolate as it were. I have chosen to post the positive nutritional information but I have also read negative information about eating raw cacao as well.
Serotonin - Cacao raises the level of serotonin in the brain and therefore acts as an anti-depressant, promoting an overall sense of well-being.

Endorphins - These are our natural pain and stress chemicals known as neurotransmitters. Cacao stimulates the secretion of endorphins, which can help to produce a pleasurable feeling.

Phenylethylamine (PEAs) - PEAs are a natural chemical compound that are also created within the brain and released when we are in love. It acts as a mild mood elevator and an anti-depressant, and it helps increase focus and alertness.

Anandamide - Anandamide is known as the "bliss chemical" because it is released by the brain when we are feeling happy. Cacao contains both N-acylethanolamines that are believed to temporarily increase the levels of anandamide in the brain and enzyme inhibitors that slow its breakdown. This promotes relaxation for a longer period of time. source

Technically, quinoa (KEEN-wah) is classified not as a grain but as a type of seed, that of the goosewort plant, a relative of spinach and chard. Quinoa provides a complete protein, making it especially valuable for those who prefer to reduce or completely eliminate animal protein from their diets. It contains all the essential amino acids, including lysine, which is crucial for growing and repairing body tissues. One cup of quinoa provides 9 grams of protein which is one more gram than a medium chicken egg (and unlike the egg, quinoa is unlikely to come from a factory farm).

This seed-like grain has prebiotic properties, feeding the beneficial bacteria in your digestive tract. Since it is easily digested, your body can readily access the vitamins and minerals it contains. Quinoa also provides a good source of insoluble fiber, promoting healthy elimination processes, helping maintain colon health and preventing the formation of gallstones. The folate and vitamin B in quinoa also boost the liver's ability to eliminating toxins from the body. People at high risk for cancer, as well as those with high blood pressure or cardiovascular disease are often advised to eat more whole grains, yet if they have celiac disease or other forms of gluten sensitivities, they must steer clear of many popular grain products. Quinoa is gluten-free, so those who cannot tolerate gluten can eat it. source

With science on our side, we can once again enjoy the wonderfully nutritious egg. Along with milk, eggs contain the highest biological value (or gold standard) for protein. One egg has only 75 calories but 7 grams of high-quality protein, 5 grams of fat, and 1.6 grams of saturated fat, along with iron, vitamins, minerals, and carotenoids.

The egg is a powerhouse of disease-fighting nutrients like lutein and zeaxanthin. These carotenoids may reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in older adults. And brain development and memory may be enhanced by the choline content of eggs. source

Butternut squash contains many vital poly-phenolic anti-oxidants and vitamins. Similar to other Cucurbitaceae members, this too is one of the low-calorie vegetables, which provides just 45 calories per 100 g. It contains no saturated fats or cholesterol; however, is rich source of dietary fiber and phyto-nutrients. Squash is one of the common vegetables that often recommended by dieticians in the cholesterol controlling and weight reduction programs.

It has more vitamin A than that in pumpkin. At 10630 IU per 100 g, it is perhaps the single vegetable source in the Cucurbitaceae family with the highest levels of vitamin-A, providing about 354% of RDA. Vitamin A is a powerful natural anti-oxidant and is required by the body for maintaining the integrity of skin and mucus membranes. It is also an essential vitamin for good eye-sight. Research studies suggest that natural foods rich in vitamin A help the body protected against lung and oral cavity cancers.

Furthermore, butternut squash has plenty of natural poly-phenolic flavonoid compounds like α and ß-carotenes, cryptoxanthin-ß, and lutein. These compounds convert to vitamin A inside the body and deliver same protective functions of vitamin A on the body. source

The inauguration hoopla is over leaving analysts to dissect the speeches, fashion, and tone of the extraordinary event. We were all surprised to hear Obama mention global warming and wonder what if anything this means. Is it simply lip service or does Obama start becoming a more effective president especially pertaining to the issue which is of prime importance for humanity.

At 8:10 a.m. E.T. futures are flat and the price of oil per barrel is slightly down. The market is poised to open flat.

The week continues to be about fourth quarter corporate earnings reports. So far the reports have been positive as the indexes are at highs not seen in over 5 years, actually pre-official recession levels. The question becomes will we see a retreat, new record highs, or the indexes remaining in their present range.

Good Night

The active principles in nutmeg have many therapeutic applications in many traditional medicines as anti-fungal, anti-depressant, aphrodisiac, digestive, and carminative functions.

This prized spice is a good source of minerals like copper, potassium, calcium, manganese, iron, zinc and magnesium. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids that helps control heart rate and blood pressure. Manganese and copper are used by the body as co-factors for the antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase. Iron is essential for red blood cell production and as a co-factor for cytochrome oxidases enzymes.

It is also rich in many vital B-complex vitamins, including vitamin C, folic acid, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin A and many flavonoid anti-oxidants like beta-carotene and cryptoxanthin that are essential for optimum health. source

The Poet Rocked

I thought the poem was extraordinary. I was literally in tears to hear something so gracious and sweeping in scope during a Presidential inauguration.

Wall Street Is Closed Today

Good morning. It is 18 degrees with a little sun clearing through the streaky clouds here in Upstate NY. I hope you had a good relaxing weekend. Today we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr, and today we also can witness President Obama's second public inauguration, speech, and festivities. I will be watching the Knicks play the Nets at 3:30. The streets are quiet, most people have the day off. So if you can reflect on MLK, he was extraordinary, and have a peaceful day.

The cholesterol-lowering ability of collard greens may be the greatest of all commonly eaten cruciferous vegetables. In a recent study, steamed collard greens outshined steamed kale, mustard greens, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage in terms of its ability to bind bile acids in the digestive tract. When this bile acid binding takes place, it is easier for the bile acids to be excreted from the body. Since bile acids are made from cholesterol, the net impact of this bile acid binding is a lowering of the body's cholesterol level. It's worth noting that steamed collards show much greater bile acid binding ability than raw collards.
We get unique health benefits from collard greens in the form of cancer protection. The cancer-preventive properties of collard greens may be largely related to 4 specific glucosinolates found in this cruciferous vegetable: glucoraphanin, sinigrin, gluconasturtiian, and glucotropaeolin. Each of these glucosinolates can be converted into an isothiocyanate (ITC) that helps lower our cancer risk by supporting our detox and anti-inflammatory systems. source
