Vitamin D deficiency can occur for a number of reasons:
You don't consume the recommended levels of the vitamin over time. This is likely if you follow a strict vegetarian diet, because most of the natural sources are animal-based, including fish and fish oils, egg yolks, cheese, fortified milk, and beef liver.
Your exposure to sunlight is limited. Because the body makes vitamin D when your skin is exposed to sunlight, you may be at risk of deficiency if you are homebound, live in northern latitudes, wear long robes or head coverings for religious reasons, or have an occupation that prevents sun exposure. source

Good Night
My chiropractor told me that you can benefit from getting out in the daylight for 20 minutes even though it's cloudy. In these parts it's cloudy for days on end, still you need the exposure for the vitamin D connection.

Jim,
An endocrinologist told me that winter exposure to sun when clothed is not enough for Vitamin D production. Get naked in the snow, then maybe.
Otherwise, you gotta take the supplement.
Mark
Thanks Mark, I do take the supplement - vit D3 5,000 IU. I also take a long walk with the dog during the daytime, sans sun glasses.
