Whose surprised? The NRA's answer to every problem is guns. Look if you ask a surgeon what the answer is he's going to recommend cuts and if you ask a carpenter he'll tell you he has the answered hammered out, and so on and so forth.
I think having rapid fire assault weapons so readily available is a problem that has to stop, has to change somehow. At the minimum keep them legal but make the requirements to get them extraordinarily hard and intense - things like waiting lists and extreme pricing etc.
