He had no real representational drawing skills. I know 5th graders that can draw better. His art was the triumph of pure artistic genius over technique. The other extreme are the super realists like Chuck Close and Norman Rockwell who represent the triumph of technique over purely artistic genius.

I'm looking for formative work by major artists lately. Pollack was on his own special planet.

I agree, there is nobody else quite like him. Sometimes when I look at a Pollack I think I'm looking @ the very chaos of creation itself at the Quantum level. You know those videos that start you at ground level and zoom out to the edge of the Universe? I think Pollack takes you all the way down in the other direction. The really weird part of it is you end up in the same place going in either direction.
