The Firing Squad

Ronnie Lee Gardner is scheduled to be executed by firing squad on Friday, tomorrow.

Gardner killed a man with his gun during an escape attempt.

Gardner has chosen firing squad because Utah offers it - its the firing squad or "legal" injection. Not many have elected firing squad so this is a first in recent times.

In my opinion, life in prison is a far more imposing sentence. The convict has to deal with the intensity of prison life and then comes to a crossroads - either they become more hardened or they see a little bit of light. The latter is the better choice and of course more desirable.

He is scheduled to be executed Friday by a firing squad...

Two men in recent years, including a prisoner in Virginia earlier this spring, have elected to be put to death by the electric chair, which by all accounts is a gruesome and violent means of demise.

“It will have a big ripple effect in the public...Utah will be known as the state that carried out an execution by firing squad.”

It's the best thing he could have done for the anti capital punishment cause.

OTOH, I think it's weird to let a murderer choose his fate in this way.

The news is saying his team is trying their hardest to get a reprieve. So I'm thinking maybe it was a calculated move choosing firing squad.

I would agree, why does he get to choose? Why is that.

I was once against capital punishment. I'm ambivalent today. Sometimes, I feel life in a Max. security prison is actually a worse punishment. I visited Alcatraz a couple of yrs. ago and I got news for you, it was not a vacation resort for the men who resided there.
