Honey Bee

The world is clearly in a state of noticeable environmental change.

Perhaps some could argue that the political changes somehow correspond to environmental changes as well.

I ran across an article at Raw Story about how honeys bees were dwindling and dying out in a perplexing way.

This is something I was completely unaware of, and a bit surprized to read about.

I decided to look a little further and came across Mid-Atlantic Apiculture.

Apiculture - noun, technical term for beekeeping.

There is indeed a term for what is happening to the honey bees - Honey bee colony collapse disorder.

""During the last three months of 2006, we began to receive reports from commercial beekeepers of an alarming number of honey bee colonies dying in the eastern United States," says Maryann Frazier, apiculture extension associate in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences. "Since the beginning of the year, beekeepers from all over the country have been reporting unprecedented losses."

This might sound trivial to the pessimist but this is actually a rather big deal.

Bees are responsible not only for honey but for pollination. There are many many food crops that are dependent on bees for pollination.

Without the pollination, we have a problem.

Check it out.
