What can they do? The level of defeat they suffered cannot be overestimated. The Dems. lost everything plus their credibility as a party. Having more voters doesn't mean you win in GOP America. The GOP doesn't view elections as debates over policy like the Dems. do they see it as warfare where the opposition is the enemy to be crushed and then relegated to penury or better yet prison or an early grave. The Dems. win and see that as the chance to compromise with their opponents. We saw just that in Hillary as we went into the general. She was so over confident that she ditched her slight move to the left and basically slapped Bernie's people in the face in an attempt to ingratiate herself with Republicans she thought would defect to her. Boy, was she wrong. She lost Bernie's people and gained nothing. In fact, it probably cost her the election in those four blue states she lost.
Your point is well taken. The GOP wants blood and the Dems project onto the GOP the notion of compromise. Authoritarians don't do compromise. It works on the neighbor to neighbor basis, I can compromise with my GOP neighbors just fine but at the political level - no go.
