At the root of the venom directed against Francis is the fear that he will decouple the carefully cultivated alliance between free-market, anti-government conservatives here in the U.S. and the leadership of the Catholic Church, which for decades has assured Catholics that they could merrily back anti-redistributive, anti-environmental, and anti-labor policies as long as they opposed abortion. The removal of the anti-abortion trump card is an existential threat to the existing political alignment and the free reign of the free market. As Mullarkey warns, the “endgame” of Francis’ view is a “transfer of wealth”—and that’s an endgame that conservatives can’t tolerate, even if a comes from a leader they once considered infallible.

The GOP is all for the redistribution of wealth, as long as it's all going north to the blessed 1% ( AKA the Creators.) The poor are to be shunned even criminalized as God's rejects ( the fallen.) The middle class is no longer necessary and is to be placed among the poor in the future.
These guys are going to be writhing in their skin when Francis talks about global warming and income inequality. Couldn't happen to a more deserving bunch.
They thought they had a deal with the Vatican where it kept it's focus on Abortion and other social issues where they agree with it. The turn toward Climate Justice and economic Justice has really pissed off them off.
It's long overdue too, this is the type of reform that makes people interested in studying spirituality which actually can be positive if done in an open, caring type of way. The strict doctrine shit just turns people off except the GOP of course, the GOP lives for restrictions. I left the Catholic Church when I was 15, mentally when I was about 11, I thought it was a rotten thing, now I like this pope. I will not be resurrecting my roots as it were, but my appreciation is there.
