'Complete Nonsense'

Marsha Blackburn is in the US Congress representing - wait for it - Tennessee. She is a powerful politician, the Vice Chairman of the Energy And Commerce Committee. Just in case you were wondering what kind of effect Pope Francis would have on Congressional policy regarding global warming, rest assured that it's all in good, capable, and competent hands...

BBC: Ignore Pope on climate, says Republican Marsha Blackburn
Republican Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn, the second-highest ranking member on the House energy committee, says the jury is out on global warming.

She also rejected the theory of evolution. Scientists say her views are "complete nonsense".

"The jury is still out saying man is the cause for global warming, after the earth started to cool 13 years ago," she says.

These are dangerous people and have no business being allowed anywhere near power, but somehow they end up there. You figure it out. She doesn't believe in EVOLUTION? She's not alone though I was listening to some complete moron last evening on our local right wing talk radio station and he was spouting off the same nonsense. I can't even carry on a conversation with these people anymore. Honestly, I have no respect for any of them.

It's the literal fundies, they don't have the ability to be open to symbolism, so they have to conflate reality with the Bible. They see the Bible not as a work of symbolism but as a literal accurate presentation of our reality. A person with a more nuanced mind could very easily hold the old testament notion of the universe being created in 7 days in a symbolic sense with our scientific understanding of evolution. Not only that but it's the literal sensation type people who always gravitate to positions of power, and they just do not get it, they don't get anything but what's right in front of the nose. This person is there for the same reason Kim Davis is in charge in Kentucky, she is asserting her religious views on a desperately needed global issue and the consequence is the world burns, nothing happens. The worst has happened in our politics, not only is it dominated by corporatism but it's also repressed by fundamentalism. I am absolutely positive that our 'founding fathers' did not have this in mind. And to top it off, these fundies believe they have the moral high ground, they are irreproachable to a fault except when they are caught flaunting their companion hypocrisies, hypocrisies that are always present in these people, always.
