Except its monstrous and almost unfathomable.
Like you, I was reading that some scientists believe that cleaning up the oil drenched birds is not really helpful. Some species will die anyhow, and the intense human contact creates a type of trauma that's hard to shake.
I took a CNN poll yesterday that listed about four of the most drastic results of the leak and asked the poll taker to list which was the worst. The majority pointed to environmental damage as number one. Yet that is a complex issue. So many aspects of the environment will be adversely affected for decades. The Gulf will not be the same in our lifetimes.
I must say the statements coming out of the GOP on this thing are about as out of line as expected, shameless.
McClatchy: Government doubles previous oil flow estimate for BP well
...a panel of scientists had concluded that 20,000 to 50,000 barrels, or as much as 2.1 million gallons, were pouring into the Gulf of Mexico every day...

As predicted the Gopers are now blaming the lack of Gov't oversight for the gusher and therefore want to charge the taxpayers for the clean up no less! Talk about chutzpah! These are the same idiots that scream bloody murder about BIG GOv't regulations on business. In 2005 they removed most oversight on the OIL Industry. Now they want to charge who? Pathetic! These people have no sense of irony or shame. They only care about the rich and powerful. This is really just more of the GOP's blame the victims rant. What friggin hypocrites these thugs are.
I am now of the mind that there is only one important and urgent step to take. Stop the leak. The effort has to kick into superlative overtime. Declare war on the leak and go at it with full force.
Obama is not capable of anything remotely called urgent, except maybe an urgent bowel movement. he's a lousy excuse for a dynamic young leader. He's too busy having meetings just our luck we hired Mr. Bureaucrat. he would have made a fine Postmaster General but not President .
