The Market On Wednesday

40,000 to 50,000 corporate jobs were cut on Tuesday. This figure does not include smaller companies. We probably can assume many more job cuts today. Its as if all the residents of one entire city after another loses their jobs.

Futures are up and the market has had a three day period of slight gains.

Investors' attention will be on corporate results from companies in many different sectors. In all probability some results will be better than expected but most will not. The hope is that any market downturns today will be slight.

Obama will meanwhile work to engage bipartisan, read that as Republican, support for his stimulus package and investors are very curious about its potential. This curiosity has added some buoyancy in an otherwise bottomless market.

Reuters: Stock futures up; Fed, slew of earnings eyed
The market will be looking for any announcement of new policy measures, such as purchasing long-dated Treasuries...

...Starbucks...AT&T...ConocoPhillips...Boeing...Boston Scientific...Cabot...Legg Mason ...Qualcomm...Symantec...and Wells Fargo & Co...(will be announcing results).

Hi ! What can anyone say? The disaster that is befalling us now will scar an entire generation. When I left College in the Mid-70's work was also very hard to come by. I worked for 5 yrs. in the ghetto in a very dangerous job and was almost killed twice. In my next job/business,I spent the next 20 yrs. fighting to keep my business alive and fighting period. I got 2 black belts and became a kick boxer to learn how to defend myself from the continous assualts that were part of my work place. I then spent yrs. working for big and small Corps. a most unsatisfying situation where I didn't know from one day to the next if I'd have a job. Now @ 60 I'm without any work or any business.

No analogy fits the countries present situation perfectly, they all fall short. The only one that comes close I guess is the Titanic. America thought by the 21st. Century it had built an economy that was unsinkable. Till we struck the Housing ice berg. Our Capt. a rash man was in a hurry and didn't think he needed radar or look outs or advice. He didn't even think he needed to be on the bridge, leaving the ship of state in the hands of incompetants. Even after we hit the berg he lied to the crew and the passengers and himself about how bad the damage was below decks. As the water flooded in and we began to sink he assured everyone that we were going to be ok, that the fundamentals of the ship were sound. Then Sept.17th and he had one of his flunkies tell us that we were mortally wounded, that he and the wealthiest passengers and the were leaving on the limited number of lifeboats available. They waved good-bye on Jan 20th and left the ship to the rest of us and our newly elected Capt. I'm afraid there aren't anymore lifeboats and throwing the deck chairs overboard ( the stimulus pkg.) isn't going to save the ship. She's down by the bow now and the band is playing. The water is mighty cold and many won't survive till the rescue ships arrive if they ever do.

This is a real eye opening experience, watching this whole mess unfold.

Its hard to be detached and objective because I'm right dab square in the middle of it. Everyone's future and my future are linked excepting an elite few who can survive any economy including none which seems to be where we are heading.

I support the idea of bringing individuals before Congress for some grill time and allow them to roast in front of the nation. Bush is untouchable, and we know this. His family is so well connected that he is buffered times a billion.

The only way Bush gets his is with the ton of books that will come out to excoriate and flay him. The corporate people have a huge megaphone and they will work to bury the evidence and shift the topic, lie and utilize generations of manipulative know how to gain political advantages.

Our job is to keep rejecting the lies, in whatever small way.

On a personal note, if you have all that physical training then you might be in decent shape, probably better than many 20 years younger so, you have time to get out there and do some damage if you want to.

I have to keep working for at least 10 more years or probably more but I'm a little younger, just a tad.

I wish I was still in fighting shape, but the back is pretty much a goner and so is the stomach from working in a high stress smoke filled environment for 25 yrs.
