Seth Abramson - I'd add that Manafort—despite being in financial trouble—offered his services to Trump as Campaign Manager FOR FREE. That means he expected to get money in the job by other means—a possible smoking gun that his direction of Trump's Russia policy was part of a criminal conspiracy.

I believe that when TrumPutin fired Manafort and said it was because of his Russian connections his campaign was essentially intentionally trying it to make it look like that if anyone looked back he could say see I had nothing to do with the Russians. It was something he did on purpose for precisely the effect he's trying to get out of it now. The trouble is he didn't back away from Manafort's and others connections to Russia and Putin et al. he did just the opposite he hired Bannon and the Mercers ( Campbridge Analytica Inc.) to run the campaign and to coordinate their campaign with the ongoing Russian efforts to sabotage the election and rig it in favor of THEIR candidate DJ Trumputin. Mueller is going to lay this out in great detail if his investigation survives. Manafort and Gates are just pieces of a far bigger puzzle being slowly assembled.
We're reading that the reasoning behind firing Mueller is shot to hell. Mueller's weight increased with the indictment of the 13 Russians spelling out in detail that Russia did in fact work to disrupt our election. Trump's it's a hoax 'ploy' no longer holds up. Trump has no reason to fire Mueller other than he is worried that Mueller has him in his sights, which no doubt Mueller does have. Trump is between a rock and a hard place and his only choice seems to be to continue to pour it on with his rabid base. Just look at his reception at CPAC where he even skewers dying John McCain in what is once again another contemptible moment. Manafort and Trump seem like a match made in heaven with Manafort needing to save his ass, literally, and Trump also slithering around to save his own ass from Russians of all shapes and sizes and for a variety of reasons from pee pee tape to being in debt as well.
TrumPutin will only get more dangerous the deeper he is enmeshed in this scandal. Here's the problem TRumPutin like Manafort is at heart a gambler and a swindler. He will take big chances if he can see a way out and TrumPutin thinks he can pardon his way clear is my guess. He might in the short, but he faces the wrath of the voters in 9 mos. If he and the Russians openly try to F* ck with this coming election all hell will break out in this country.
