If it hadn't been the emails it would have been some other pumped up phony scandal like Benghazi or The Clinton Foundation.

Strikes me that Flynn and company decided that they were way above the law, in fact they believe they are the law. When you are the law anything you do is for the good of the country. It is this level of hubris and arrogance that eventually bites one right back in the backside.
