I'm a 350 member and I like what they have to say, but honestly its going to take a whole lot more at this juncture then talk to stop the ongoing destruction of the planet by humanity.
I'm not a fan of divestment either, makes no sense to me. This is what divestment is - a buying opportunity for some billionaire, thus placing more control of the corporation in his greedy little hands. At least when you own stock you have the right to appear at holders meetings and air your stuff, also vote of board members etc. Divestment is the equivalent of thumbing your nose,it feels great but ultimately it's only a weak gesture, changes nothing. You want to change oil consumption - make high mileage cars readily available and make them cost effective. Also make alternatives similarly available. It's supply and demand, that's how it works. There's no other alternative.
I agree, but first you have to put the right price on stuff like OIL, gas etc. As long as we cont. the knuckle-headed policies of subsidizing Carbon energy instead of making people pay the real price for its externalized costs then nothing much will change. We need a radical shift away from this stuff radical and fast, half measures are not going to work to stop the disaster were facing in the near future. The idea I hear endlessly about energy Independence that talks to being free of dependency on foreign supplies of this crap is laughable. Its obvious almost the entire political power structure is in the pockets of the Fossil energy barons and the banks that back them. A first step is to end any subsidies immediately and put a Carbon tax on these products and level the playing field for Alt. energy. Until this is done we will be just spinning our wheels and going nowhere but right off a cliff.
