Greece is sliding down the slippery slope of austerity. As I see it austerity is nothing more or less then gutting the State and allowing those people who were receiving a significant portion of their living from State benefits or jobs to bear the full brunt of this policy. The right here wants a similar arrangement. The underlying ideas are simple, social safety net programs are viewed as unsustainable and the State itself is seen as a vehicle to garnish the top few % of society and essentially to keep a gun pointed at the rest of the people. In short Fascism.
There doesn't seem to be any stopping it in the USA either. I would disagree with you in that the GOP thinking is that social safety net programs are viewed as unsustainable because from the right they are viewed as anti-American socialism and are unconstitutional. Otherwise, I fully agree.
"I would disagree with you in that the GOP thinking is that social safety net programs are viewed as unsustainable. " No doubt this is the view of the majority of that so called party, it's not however the consensus view of the larger political class. I think unsustainable is probably closer to what most politicians think.
