Lost Cause

Nicely done - good read.

AlterNet: Why the White South Is Still in Denial About Slavery
After Lincoln’s assassination, Republicans struck an implicit deal with the South, a sort of economic/cultural tradeoff, in which the South was allowed to construct the edifice of the Lost Cause culture in return for letting Northern investors exploit the South’s resources.

Why the south is still in denial? Like the article says there was no reconciliation, still hasn't been. You can't eliminate prejudice by instituting an official government recognition of wrongs, but it does help to lessen it. You can consciousness raise, you can decree a recognition of the injustice, and you can hope things will get better as the generations roll by. You have to work it from both ends if you want change. Not much has been done in this case.

Equally tragic is the Jim Crow century. What about that?

Interesting that they included Reagan's quote about German guilt. I assume that it was included as an example of wrongheadedness, but I think it's ok. You don't find that kind of well developed guilt in the American south.
