One Can Only Hope

I'll say it again. I read Bill Palmer mostly for fun. He's not a deep journalist, he's an opinion writer who strikes a nerve. He is solely focused on Trump's possible demise. It's only possible, it is not a given that Trump's political demise will happen.

Right now we are witnessing the GOP throwing all in behind Trump. 2018 will be the year of the smear. The GOP will smear any opponent of Trump's who is even slightly provoking questions in the Trump-Russia fiasco. The GOP simply wants to sweep all of it under a rug. Mueller and the FBI appear to be the first casualty, but more will follow. In addition there will be a tremendous amount of misdirection. We will hear about the GOP's real villain, Hillary Clinton, many many times. No, there will be a fight to the death surrounding Trump and the GOP is all on board. They like those tax cuts for the billionaires that places the burden of debt on middle class people and the poor. Their appetite for corruption and greed has been very nicely wetted and now, they want a lot more including SSI and Medicare.

The Palmer Report: It’s all closing in on Donald Trump

I agree on your analysis of the Palmer Report. He's way to optimistic if you ask me. I think the oppoition in Congress is weak and even craven ( Chuck and Nancy) and the rest are so powerless as to be irrevelant. On the other hand the GOP is in lock step with it's propaganda organs and Trumpf and prepared to as you say sweep it all under the rug. If I had to place a bet on who is going to come out on top of this situation I'd put it on Donald not the opposition. A good example is how much effort was put to stop any change in the healthcare realm with Obamacare. With all that effort and all that fighting, it didn't matter in the end Trumpf and his right-wing allies and the rest of the GOP managed to seriously damage the law by essentially rendering the individual mandate toothless ( by removing the fines.) My guess is in 2018 they'll now move against Medicaid, Medicare, SSI etc. and whose going to stop them? By next fall we could find ourselves with a severely gutted Federal Gov't except for the Military and anything that helps BIG Corp. Enterprises that are connected to the GOP. We'll also be facing GOP attempts to stop millions from voting in next years elections. It's going to be a really nasty nasty year coming up and I won't be surprised a bit if Mueller goes and the FBI is purged and turned against the rest of us BIG Time. Trumpf ends the year IMO having essentially consolidated the GOP behind him. His biggest weakness right now is that a very large majority of the public HATES the MFER with a vengeance and he knows it. Will it matter? Maybe.

The most noticeable change was the move to being all in behind Trump. When that happened, and the tax cut for billionaires was very important in this, the GOP will now go to war for Trump as a more singular united entity. They realize that 35% to 38% approval is their range and that's just fine. They never believed in democracy to begin with. Plus they have a constituency that is brainwashed and ready to die for it. This is not going to happen without a fight. The majority of Americans have power. The press has power. Trump has a criminal mind. He could care less that his presidency is about destroying the country. It's all his ego.

The sad part is the enormous damage being done to major Institutions. The "deep state" nonsense is basically the confluence of two hard right ideas. The first is that the only use for a State at all is to impose the right's idea of laws and the second is for external defense. Anything outside this realm is to be cut ( THE EPA, EDucation, Healthcare, SSI etc.) and anyone working for the Gov't needs to pass a loyalty test to TRUMPF and the GOP. 2018 is going to be a battle royal on all these fronts. Our goal is to get back control of atleast one or both houses of Congress and it's NOT going to be easy considering how weak the Dem. party is. Right now the belief among Dem. pols is they will glide in behind a simple anti-Trumpf banner. I doubt it.

I take a measure of comfort in the Alabama senate race. Moore's defeat was a real significant victory for Democrats. Right now the Dems would clean up in an election. November, however, is a log way away.
