The Market On Thursday

Good morning. It is 48 degrees and cloudy here in the Upper Hudson Valley. We've had a cooling trend and it was back to jackets, sweaters, and winter blankets for a day. Allegedly the temperature goes back up to 70 degrees later today. I hope you are okay and not too traumatized from David Letterman signing off. We'll miss him, what a distinctive character. I just discovered some new tenants on the property. There's a cherry tree very close to the back of the house and high up around the second story of the house parallel to a window we can a robin's nest. Mom is very active bringing food back to her babies. It's really a joy to watch.

At 8:45 a.m. ET futures are modestly lower and the price of light crude is once again rising and approaching $60 a barrel. The market is poised to open lower.

Weekly first time layoffs just came in at 274,000 and the trend continues to be positive on employment. Notice that Transocean and BP have reached some settlement claims surrounding the huge Gulf oil spill of 5 years ago.

CNN: Stocks: 5 things to know before the open
Shares in the oil drilling services firm Transocean are rising by about 2.5% premarket after the company said it had reached two settlements related to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill in 2010.
