Saturday.

Good morning. It is 70 degrees and cloudy here in Upstate NY. We had thunder and rain throughout the night. The new dog got scared and spent the night in the bathroom hunkered down with her nose under the little kick plate area under the vanity. Now she is out retrieving a ball, so the damage isn't permanent. I am going to relax a bit with the blogging through the long weekend so if you see a little less attention here that's why. I will be back on Tuesday.

Looking through the news I think this article merits attention beyond the upcoming bombing of Syria. CNN: Why Fukushima is worse than you think

After all, there's pollution but then there's pollution that will very quickly kill you. Speaking of killing, the thought is going around questioning why it's better to kill people using bombs than to kill them using chemical gas weapons. Good point there - I think. Of course in America the mechanism to make bombs is a strong part of our tradition and economy, our economy being the leading economy in the world, and consequently the best, right, because the biggest is the best and the holiest. We are humane, we don't gas people, we just blow them to kingdom come. I would point to Nagasaki and Hiroshima as highlights of that mechanism. Unfortunately it's too easy to be sarcastic, sarcasm strikes me as a symptom of ignorance so when I find something intelligent to type I will.

The Market On Friday

Good morning. It is 67 degrees and cloudy here in Upstate NY. The weather logo shows sunshine, go figure because it sure seems like rain is on the way. Hey the long weekend awaits, nothing like a three day weekend to help boost just about anything. It looks like the US is going to go it alone and eventually start raining bombs on Syrian military assets as they are so coldly and objectively stated. Maybe it won't happen at all, as Britain wised up real fast. It's been a strange week as usual with the threat of a new war oscillating with MLK 50th anniversary of the "dream speech." Turns out the I have a dream part was spoken extemporaneously, and a wow to that.

At 8:10 a.m. futures are slightly higher and the price of oil per barrel is lower. The market is poised to open in the mixed to flat area.

One would suspect that many floor traders are resting on ocean related beaches as the holiday weekend is taken early. Consequently on days like today trading is volume is lower but things can become a little more volatile. The interest is in a steady as she goes type of day heading into September. That is the hope.

The Market On Thursday

Good morning. It is 66 degrees and cloudy here in Upstate NY . The weather logo is once again showing rain and lightning for today. Perhaps today will be the day. We watched the full MLK 'I Have A Dream' speech last night on MSNBC at 8 pm. It truly is the most amazing speech of the 20th Century, this is true. We've heard the speech so many times at this point and yet it doesn't lose any of it's impact, in fact just the opposite, the words seem to gain in meaning and relevancy. The most stunning part is that King was only 34 at the time, 34 can you imagine. Most people can barely tie a shoe lace at 34, and King presents the model of maturity and wisdom for this country at 34.

At 8:20 a.m. ET futures are modestly higher and the price of oil per barrel is down. The market is poised to open in the mixed area.

Just as we had good eurozone days and bad eurozone days a few months ago, today we have a good Syria day with investors setting aside their fears of a new war in the Middle East. We are not so sure about their appeasement but this is out of our control. In a few minutes the government will release data on first time weekly layoffs along with a revision of the second quarter GDP. Add it all together and that is the force on the indexes this morning.

The Market On Wednesday

Good morning. It is 64 degrees and foggy here in Upstate NY. The weather logo is suggesting rain. Like you I've been keeping my eye on the news about Syria. Looks like a new war is brewing with promises of a "quick" involvement and no troops on the ground. America knows how to bomb, that's for damn sure. So bombing it will probably be. Hard to imagine any person going about their daily activity with bombs falling all around, it's got to be an instantaneous heaping of trauma and disorientation. It's just horrible, yet the powers that be seem to demand revenge for this savage gassing, savagery heaped on top of savagery all around with plenty to spare. I wonder why America didn't bomb the Iraqis during the Iran-Iraq war where millions died, many from gassing. I guess we were saving it for later.

At 8:20 a.m. ET futures are slightly lower and the price of oil per barrel is up. The market is poised to open in the mixed area although the elevated price of oil will push some equities into the black.

The immediate fear of the Syrian war is subsiding for the moment and the market is more stable this morning. Notice that the price of oil is shooting up to extreme highs. Say hello to even higher gas prices. Also notice that there is a rupture occurring in the economy of India. This is one to keep track of, India being a key BRIC country with it's gigantic population and formerly growing economy. In some respects, India's economic destabilization if it were to come to that would be far more reaching than a war in Syria.

CNN: Stocks steadier after sell-off

The Market On Tuesday

Good morning. It is 67 degrees and rainy here in Upstate NY. The weather logo is predicting rain and lightning today. In my opinion the dominating news is a probable US attack on Syria. John Kerry's statements are the best indication of the newest war approaching. Certainly the hawks are loving it, because after all what could possibly be better than a new war for the war monger. Recall that back as the US invaded Iraq, the neocons were calling for a continuation of the attack into Syria. Their wish is coming true, better late than never. As usual the relevant news is sketchy, unclear, and stamped with monstrous guilt.

At 8:10 a.m. futures are moderately lower and the price of oil per barrel is higher. The market is poised to open lower although some energy stocks may benefit.

The world news of an imminent US attack on Syria is shaking world markets and is the main trigger for today's lower futures. Investors will see data on housing and our favorite, consumer confidence, today. The struggle between world events and US economic news will push today's losses deeper or will modify the negative effect of the pre-Syria attack atmosphere.

Good morning. It is 63 degrees and overcast here in Upstate NY. It sure looks like the rain is coming out there. I hope your weekend was outstanding, restful, and re-energizing. We are up to our ears in cucumbers. For our garden this is the year of the cucumber and that means that with every meal I get a cucumber and tomato salad with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and sea salt.   At 8:10 a.m. ET futures are slightly lower and the price of oil is slightly higher. The market is poised to open in the mixed area.

Investors are back to pondering the fate of quantitative easing as a rather prestigious meeting on monetary policy with big names from all over the world took place over the weekend . Just as we saw a few months ago when every day was linked to the fate of the eurozone which incidentally seems to have been neatly and magically factored into the equation, the abatement of quantitative easing is in the constant foreground. It's going to happen, it's just a matter of when and how much. Most feel it will occur this Fall.

The Market On Friday

Good morning and welcome to the weekend. It is 63 degrees and sunny here in Upstate NY, it looks like a gorgeous day awaits. Racism is very much in the news right now, as you know. My overall impression is that discussion is good, yet much of it regarding racism is negative and enforces racism itself. So separating out the worst we are left with a conversation that is still very difficult to have. In some ways there doesn't appear to be a common language or lexicon that we have surrounding the discussion on racism. We can use some words but not others, we can talk about some tendencies and patterns but not others. It is a sensitive subject, like an exposed nerve that sets off intense feeling and suffering. I don't have a solution here but I do know and trust that fundamentally all humans are capable of great wisdom, compassion, and understanding.

The Market On Thursday

Good morning. It is foggy and 63 degrees here in Upstate NY. The forecast logo is showing thunder storms later on. The news remains focused on Antoinette Tuff, the school clerk in Atlanta that thwarted a potentially horrific school shooting by another utterly distraught and despondent young man. The amazing part is that she used her words, words of kindness and compassion, to talk him out of it. It was not a matter of the only thing that stops a bad man with a gun is a good guy with a gun. One suspects NRA people are furious over this - talk about another tragedy. Hopefully we will be hearing more about Antoinette Tuff and people will learn some valuable lessons here.

At 7:00 a.m. ET futures are moderately higher and the price of oil per barrel is down. The market is poised to open in the mixed area.

I can't explain why futures are higher this morning, perhaps investors are taking a break from the market's last two week drop. A person of interest is emerging. Janet Yellen is a candidate for the Fed director's job and she will be at a symposium on monetary policy. Perhaps investors like her record.

CNN: Stocks: Ready for a comeback?

If you get a chance please watch the clip I've posted titled 'Lily'. This is a very compelling three minute documentary on a young woman from Jamestown NY. She possibly is in her late teens or early 20s. Through no fault of her own she is now living in a car, plus she is handicapped but her attitude is amazing. The Market On Tuesday

Good morning. It is 58 degrees and foggy here in Upstate NY. You get the sense of anticipation in the air as students prepare to go back to school and the relaxation of the Summer yields to the business of Fall. I think the entire energy of this period culminates with Christmas and New Year's Day. It's like we are stoking the energy to carry us right up to those holidays. I see that the Obama's have gotten another Portuguese Water Dog. Beautiful looking dog too and a female to join their same breed male dog. Talk about a lucky dog, what a charmed life for an animal, the President's Dog.

At 8:00 a.m. ET futures are flat and the price of oil is down. The market is poised to open in the flat to lower area.

With the DOW on the edge of 15,000 and the projection of more losses, the market is in at the least a mini correction. Investors are adjusting to the abatement of quantitative easing, and so are we. On Wednesday the Fed will release more info on their monetary policy and this will be a big deal. This is where we are at, the market is on a bear run. More than likely this continues until there is an adjustment to the end of quantitative easing.

It looks like Al Jazeera is reformatting it's news for the American market. Right now I can't embed anything from their site onto this blog. Bummer. Maybe this will change, maybe not. Right now you can watch the Al Jazeera channel on Youtube but even there many of the clips are unavailable in the USA. Bummer again.

The Market On Monday

Good morning. It is 61 degrees and overcast here in Upstate NY on this fine Monday morning. The weather logo is not indicating rain but I would not take that to the bank. I hope you had a good weekend. I had a recently productive weekend where I put some time into cleaning up the yard, sweeping the driveway, and trying to polish up the old street appeal. I'm hoping to take another Coursera course on finance and upgrade my understanding of the world's money flow. The last course was a basic finance course, it was interesting. It was mostly about understanding how interest rates are calculated. It's good stuff to know.

At 7:57 a.m. ET futures are flat and the price of oil per barrel is down. The market is poised to open in the flat to slightly lower area.

The article is predicting a calm day. The last two weeks on Wall Street have been anything but calm with the DOW dropping roughly 500 points. Trading is often volatile when many investors are on vacation and trading volume is low, plus August is historically a bearish month. Appreciate a calm day but do not be surprised with something less.

The Market On Friday

Good morning and welcome to the weekend. It is 53 degrees and sunny here in Upstate NY. The forecast has the temperatures going into the 80s in the next week, we shall see. This would mean a return of Summer because lately it's been early Fall. It's difficult watching reports out of Egypt. All manner of civility is gone and chaos has taken over with many senseless murders and suffering. It's hard to imagine how one could maintain their sense of sanity in the midst of it, the mental suffering of the ordinary person which never comes across on TV reports is off the chart. People want contentment and peace, everybody wants that, doesn't matter where you live on Earth. Here we loose our stuff when our usual road is closed for repairs and we are forced to detour.

At 7:55 a.m. ET futures are modestly higher and the price of oil per barrel is up. The market is poised to open higher.

It's been a harder week on Wall St. On Thursday the DOW dropped 225 points and that is a lot considering how buoyant the market has been in recent months. This drop was due to WalMart and Cisco showing poor second quarter results. Regardless even though the market is set to open higher, where is closes is a different story. When trading volume is low and investors are on vacation, volatility sometimes is higher. This week it's higher.
