New Mexico Wildfire Threatens Pueblo Indians Sacred Lands

The wildfire in New Mexico is raging across a 177-square mile area. The area involved is to the west of Santa Fe. The wildfire is "fueled by an exceptionally dry season in the Southwest and erratic winds."

I am struck by the sentiment expressed by the Pueblo Indians as they pray for the fires to die down. They are wondering what it is that they have done to cause such a disaster to befall them. Their prayers express remorse, regret, and apology. Needless to say it is a mind set that expresses humility and a sense of agreement with nature. It is a poignant way of thinking about one's place in the world. It is a mindset that is something for the rest of us to contemplate.

"We were also praying on our knees, we were asking the Creator in our cultural way to please forgive us, 'What have we done?'"
