One could make the case that Al Jazeera is the preeminent news organization in the world. It seems somewhat modeled after the BBC but there is more of a tendency with Al Jazeera to show the people's side of the issue rather than the state and corporate side.
American news is pretty much exclusively about showing and supporting the state and corporate side of the news especially with respect to America's foreign policy, foreign policy atrocities, and how corporations dominate American society. And of course another aspect of the American media is to provide a high level and large quantity of entertainment and trivial news. We want to know more about Lady Gaga, who incidentally seems like a perfectly fine performer, than news about union busting in Wisconsin or any of a multitude of problems.
