Jet Stream

Science Daily: Jet stream changes since 1960s linked to more extreme weather
summary - Increased fluctuations in the path of the North Atlantic jet stream since the 1960s coincide with more extreme weather events in Europe such as heat waves, wildfires and flooding. The new research is the first reconstruction of historical changes in the North Atlantic jet stream prior to the 20th century. By using tree rings, the researchers developed a historical look at the position of the North Atlantic jet back to 1725.

Yes, the polar vortex and the increase in blocking highs off both the west and east coast are predicted in many warming models and lo and behold here we are. I was musing on this pattern and it took me back 40 yrs. ago to the first great polar vortex event that lasted three awful winters 1977-1979. Then things warmed up radically for most of the 80's. Then at the start of the 90's we had four enormous superstorms in the east. The blocking high had arrived. Then came the polar vortex events again in the mid 90's and in the 21st century. This year after the last vortex events in 2013-14 winters we had 3 record warm winters and now another vortex event early in this winter after a record warm fall. The weather seems to be swinging to extremes. Today in NJ in some places its 70 degs. a week ago it was o degs a 70 deg swing in 7 days! The Jetstream it seems is starting to wander in big loops like a river slowing down and meandering. Some Climate models called this 20 yrs. ago and a movie called "The Day After Tomorrow" was released about an extreme version of it. The causes are in the short the extreme warming happening in the Arctic Ocean where the multi-year Ice sheet is disintegrating in front of our eyes and one of the results is a warming of the now exposed Arctic sea. This causes the Jetstream above the Arctic to slow. It's all really bad for us in the long run for a variety of reasons.

Right now, Friday 1-12-18 it's 62 degrees in the middle of January in my area. Tomorrow it's going down to 0 at night. A week ago, we had wind chill numbers down to 30 below zero. This is our new reality. We're fortunate we're in a temperature range that we can still live in. Last week it was practically suicidal to go outside. You are taking your life in your hands when it's that cold. My hands have these painful fissure cuts that came from the freezing cold. On January 2nd our furnace went out when it was single digits out. The house went down to around 40 degrees and mercifully we got a repairman here and he fixed it for $300! Where do we go to live? The south - I don't think so, way too hot. In the summer in Vegas it's regularly 115.

Yes, were to go indeed? 3 more yrs. of this klown is almost as unbearable as the cold descending on us at times.
