It's a very old Sci Fi idea that many Sci Fi novels are built around. It's not as simple though as it sounds. Sailing to a distant Star would still take a very long time and the chances such a device without some kind of protection would make it are slight. I like it for sailing around the solar system though and think that's where we'll develop this idea to the place that maybe someday it will be useful as an interstellar form of transport. To really get around in the Universe though is going to take faster than light transport and I think that will happen when we understand natural law better. Right now E=MC2 is the speed limit the speed of light, but it won't always be.
