Get caught stealing a loaf of bread and you'll possibly do 3-5yrs in prison in many Red States and a few Blue ones. Get caught stealing billions as a Big Banker and you get rewarded with all kinds of perks. The bottom line of such behavior is that the State loses its legitimacy if this kind of differential is allowed to go on for very long. Rule by law becomes a farce.
It's been a weighted judicial system for a long time. If you or I employed a roomful of lawyers, we could get away with a lot too if that was desired. Lawyers are weighted too, the priciest ones come with a greater degree of win potential.
