Personally, I think the following CNN headline is misleading. Yes, the DOW and NASDAQ are down but they were also in the mid 13,000 area which is approaching a record high. It would be unrealistic to think that the DOW should be in the 14,000 area while the country is in a depression.

The Market On Thursday
Good morning. It is 55 degrees and sunny here in Upstate NY. We were just out walking and it is gorgeous out, I could live in this type of weather pattern all year long. It's paradise, for a few months out of the year we literally live in paradise. I am back to the chiropractor this morning, the holiday threw the appointments off but now it's back to the cracking.
At 7:30 a.m. futures are moderately higher, the dollar is down against all major world currencies, and the price of oil is up per barrel. Right now the trifecta is in and the market is poised to open higher, however that could change between now and 9:30 a.m. for a few reasons.
The first is the weekly first time layoffs number which is a barometer of employment trends in the USA especially when seen in the context of previous weeks. A bad number here could throw a wrench in the slight but steady improvement meme floated out there for our convenience and to alleviate our despair.
Second, the government will release a revised number for the first quarter GDP. Needless to say a revision downwards could disappoint Wall Street.
On the other hand Germany produced some better than expected employment numbers and since Germany is a top 5 world economy this is salient information.
I would have to say this is the first morning where I am reading about troubles in Ireland in quite some time. The focus of course has been on Greece and Spain. The overall point here is that the eurozone is a mess and until some stability in Europe occurs, the market is vulnerable and finicky.
CNN: Nervous investors weigh good news

Purity
The GOTP play book is brimming with exclusion, division, and hatred. We are seeing some very scary and dangerous ideas fomenting out there. When the tactics get this ugly, people get hurt or worse.
The radical religious right front has taken the tact of attacking gay people. They are upping the ante lately by now calling for the execution of gay people. Last week recall it was simply to corral gay people and drop food in till all gay people died out, except of course for the new gay people born outside of the corral. I suspect they would have to be later identified and then dropped in. Ah yes, now I remember, gay people are not born gay, they are corrupted into gayness through other gay people and a Nazi president.
Raw Story: Kansas pastor calls on U.S. government to kill LGBT people
The radical Tea Party right is taking the tact of escalating "birtherism." One also suspects this is simply Trump's maladjusted way of garnering attention. Either way Trump's conduit to Romney is about as near and dear as it gets in American politics plus the traction and media attention Trump is generating is undeniable. Exactly how low in priority do the very real and important topics and policy issues have to sink so that someone as insignificant and screwy as Trump can control the MSM's cycle.

The Market On Wednesday
Good morning. It is 66 degrees and overcast here in Upstate NY. The rain is back and the plants are digging it. On Tuesday the thermometer surpassed 90 degrees for a spell, throw in some thick humidity and it had to be one of the hottest days for May in a long time in these parts. On Tuesday I posted two lengthy interviews with economist Krugman and they are very good as he deals with the long ongoing economic depression the country is mired in. Please check them out.
At 8:00 a.m. futures are moderately down, the dollar is mostly up against major world currencies, and the price of oil is down per barrel. The market is poised to open lower.
As predicted, yesterday's optimism over the eurozone financial crisis was short lived. Today it's back to pessimism especially surrounding some miserable news out of Spain surrounding downgrades and bank failures. In addition investors are facing the alarming concern that China's uber robust industrial blaze is cooling off. Remember that for the economy to be "good" it must be growing in all directions and when this does not occur, we fail. Now exactly how realistic is that.

We are a confident people, however when it comes to consuming, turns out this month we are not confident. We are downright insecure. The Market On Tuesday
Good morning. It is 75 degrees, sunny, and humid here in Upstate NY. The rain that was supposed to have materialized over the extended weekend did not happen. Speaking of weekends, it came and went all too fast, now it's back to work. We were out earlier doing a brisk walk through the neighborhood. The secret with the new dog is finding the right object for her to carry as we walk. Without that object she can be a little unruly with barking and with a lot of sudden scavenging moves. The object changes in value and interest each day, one day she likes a stick, the next it's an old bone. It's a live and learn situation.
At 8:00 a.m. futures are significantly higher, the dollar is mostly up against major world currencies, and the price of oil is slightly down per barrel. Right now most stocks are poised to open higher.
Investors are happy to see that Greece is now embracing the austerity minded political party over the anti-austerity party. This is surprising to me and one wonders what mischief is occurring in Greece to make this change of heart occur. It's hard to imagine that the Greek people want to willingly give up any social spending that improves the quality of their lives. Regardless as far as I can tell this seems to be the big story right now. Markets are moving on eurozone hopes as opposed to failing on eurozone fears.
Later today data on housing prices and my favorite, consumer confidence, comes through the pipe. Are you confident - possibly - but are you consumer confident? How come there isn't an index for consumer contentment?

Good morning. At 10 a.m. it is 68 degrees and mostly sunny here in Upstate NY. This is occurring in spite of the weather logos that show rain, rain, and more rain today and over the next several days.
It is a pleasant holiday weekend to say the least. Yours truly has been spending more time than usual outdoors. I am finding the outdoors to be the water for the dry sponge, it appeals on many levels.
I might add that the weekend has brought us back to juicing, the juicer is out and prominent in the kitchen. We are going through carrots and apples by the bag.
Holidays are always a good tome to recoup the body and mind, so I am trying to stay clear of too much godawful news. One almost needs to be massively 'braced' in order to read today's headlines. Let's give it a brief rest.
Enjoy your day.

One thing that caught my attention in today's article is the fact that equities in the S&P are well priced. It is suggested that investors might therefor find this to be an attractive time to buy.

In about an hour investors will see the weekly first time layoff numbers and that is always telling. All around the articles are spelling out a more optimistic morning and I believe it's mostly based on HP's better than expected first quarter results and upbeat forecast. This is contrary to the opinion that the tech sector was weakening.
Otherwise any optimism about Greece's inevitable collapse or wished for non collapse are more emotional than factual. European leaders met last night to work over policy and the word is that nothing moved forward. The leaders want Greece to implement agreed upon austerity measures and the Greek people want something better.

My visits to the chiropractor have made me more attentive to how I sit in a chair especially when I'm in front of the computer. The slouching has to stop. It would seem that investors are working under a strain of many worries today. All major global economic worries are in play. That is a true mess.

Warren Buffet didn't buy Facebook and that was strong enough advice for me.
Investors are weighing the pros and cons of the global economy. I think the fundamental issue will remain in the eurozone as we all watch the Greek economy collapse and then follow along to see how that bad outcome will be managed. Also we will see what collapses along with it and that point is possibly the most salient to the global economy. It has to be very discouraging to be a regular citizen of Greece of now.

At 7:35 a.m. futures are modestly higher, the dollar is mixed against major world currencies, and the price of oil is down per barrel. If I'm guessing and I am, the market is poised to open mixed with half up and half down. When the price of oil is down, energy stocks often go down as well and when they do, they drag lots of other stocks with them.
Essentially investors are hinging this morning's boost on a hope and a prayer. The '8' met over the weekend to shore up confidence in a strong eurozone. Well that's just fine but the proof is in the pudding. That economic mess has a ways to play out. Although futures are up, I have no confidence the market will close higher. We are into some turbulence.

We are into some turbulence.

Over the weekend the Group of eight nations met and reaffirmed their commitment to keeping Greece in the eurozone. And two opinion polls released in Greece reportedly put the pro-bailout party ahead of the anti-austerity Syriza party.
No major economic reports are expected in the U.S. on Monday.
Oil for June delivery fell $1.57 to $91.82 a barrel.

Sunday
At 6:00 it is a balmy 84 degrees in Upstate NY and we could not possibly have had a better day.
I hope everyone is enjoying the warmth. Hey the warm weather is back and the living is easier.
We are having a productive weekend gardening, mowing, partying, walking, running, and relaxing.

Anger Advice
I've posted this here several times. I think it's a powerful example of some very direct and useful advice that we occasionally see in written form.
from Chagdud Tulku
from Chagdud Tulku
"When someone insults us, we usually dwell on it, asking ourselves, "Why did he say that to me?" and on and on. It's as if someone shoots an arrow at us, but it falls short. Focusing on the problem is like picking up the arrow and repeatedly stabbing ourselves with it saying, "He hurt me so much. I can't believe he did that." Instead, we can use the method of contemplation to think things through differently, to change our habit of reacting with anger. Imagine that someone insults you. Say to yourself, "This person makes me angry. But what is anger? It is one of the poisons of the mind that creates negative karma, leading to intense suffering. Meeting anger with anger is like following a lunatic who jumps off a cliff. Do I have to do likewise? While it's crazy for him to act the way he does, it's even crazier for me to do the same."

Morning
Saturday and hooray for that. It is 51 degrees and sunny here in upstate NY. Looks like we are in for a gorgeous day and for me a lot of the time will be spent outdoors.
That crashing sound you heard last week was the stock market. The DOW is presently at 12,369.38 dropping a cool 1,000 plus points over the last few weeks. All retirement accounts, equities accounts, 401's, etc are feeling the pinch. The finger of guilt is pointed squarely at the eurozone with Greece verging on extreme economic disaster and with Spain running its own version of that same race.
The eurozone is in crisis mode with a large meeting of key players taking place next week in order to find some type of solution. Meanwhile investors are jumping for cover, selling off all kinds of assets worried that the global economy will be dented as a result of Europe's economy. Facebook's IPO did not magnetize the investment community on Friday like many said it would.
Reuters points out that the pattern has been - eurozone problem escalating to crisis level, a quick solution is put in place, appeasement occurs with world investors, until a problem starts to escalate, and repeat.
This could very well be the scenario we see, with upcoming news that some type of solution has been found until the dam bursts anew. Meanwhile the road will be bumpy.

The Market On Friday
Good morning. It is 50 degrees and sunny here in Upstate NY. It is rather gorgeous out. The morning walk was crisp as the new dog is back in better health, raring to go as it were. Unfortunately some of her less desirable habits are back with her barking at other dogs. I still can't bring treats with me to try to lure her away from the barking because she is still on a special diet. We make progress one step at a time.
At 8:10 a.m. futures are modestly higher, the dollar is mixed against major world currencies, and the price of oil is higher. The market is poised to open a little higher.
Today's big news is Facebook. Facebook's IPO will allegedly sway investors away from major concerns over the eurozone economic meltdown. We will see about that.
The troubling news out of Europe continues to stream in and there does not seem to be an end in sight. This is a rather serious crisis, think about it. Fortunately we can relax a bit over the weekend.

There you have it, the intellectual model for the establishment right is Richard Nixon. Curious in that there's no mention of GW's dazzling intellect which is apparently the new GOTP model.
