Putin's War on the Ukraine started in 2014. Putin's attempt to rebuild the Russian / Soviet Empire started the minute he assumed power in 1999. This war was preceeded by one in Checyna and Georgia and will be followed by one on Moldavia and then the Baltic States. Russian Imperial strategy is little changed since Catherine the Great and Putin is just following that script. Expand expand expand and use force where politics, subversion intimidation and threats fail. None of that apparently worked on Ukraine so he's moved on to brute force.
It's the brute force that is so unbelievably horrible. I just hope the supply of defensive weapons into Ukraine continues and increases, because the more Ukraine makes it hurt, the better. Personally I would like to see a group of Ukraine soldiers covertly go into Russia and blow up something.
I think the Uks know if they do that it will just help Putin. He'll use the attack as justification for why he sent in the troops in the first place to protect Russia.

This is the central point, this justification. It doesn't stop me from wishing to see Putin get his nose bloodied.
